Hi Kittydog, Congrats on your visa approval! I have a quick question for you - on the Passport request letter, how much time was indicated in which you had to send in your passport? My boyfriend and I were considering going travelling while awaiting PR approval so we were curious how long the embassy gives you to send in your passport to get the visa inserted. (we're also applying via Berlin) 30 days? 45 days? longer?
Thanks a lot!

Hi backtoCAN, they stated on the letter you have 60 days to send your passport to the embassy. The embassy will then take a MINIMUM of 10 working days (it's hard to say how long it will really take - but looking on statistics, it seems most people get their passports back within 3-5 weeks). What's important to know is in order for the embassy to send you back your passport, they can either send it regular post but if you want a more secure form of having them return your passport from Germany, you only have 2 couriers they work with (1) Fedex - if you want the passport sent/returned to an address outside Germany; and (2) DHL - if you want the passports returned within Germany. This is valid for the visa office in Berlin. Different embassies in other countries have different requirements. Good luck!

Hi Kittydog,
We've just received our PPR for my boyfriend - Hooray! It's been less than 3 months since we first mailed the application so we're pretty surprised (and happy!) that it's been processed so quickly. I just wanted to confirm the information you mentioned above about shipping the passport to Berlin. Did you get this info directly from the embassy? As we're sending the passport from the Netherlands to Berlin, we want to make sure we're going about it the right way... and of course the most secure. How did you go about shipping your passport? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Hi backtoCAN, congratulations!

I haven't been able to find the info on the german CIC site again... however, in June 2009, when I was researching this topic, I managed to find it on their website... so I hope the info is still current.

Here's what I found in June 2009:

Postal Delivery

Passports and documents are sent by regular mail.
Pick-up by a courier company is only possible in exceptional cases. To avoid mail delivery problems when returning your passport and documents, we ask you to submit a valid customer account number from DHL (for shipment inside Germany) or FedEx (for shipment outside Germany).
For procedural reasons, we only do business with these two courier companies and will not accept account numbers from other courier service providers.
Please note that we cannot accept credit card numbers instead of customer account numbers.
In addition, please confirm to us in writing (by fax, e-mail or post) the mailing address to which the documents should be sent, also stating a contact telephone number and/or e-mail address.
Please note that we will contact the courier company in Germany and arrange for pick-up of your passport and documents in due course.
All the above conditions must be met, otherwise all documents will be mailed to you by regular postal service.

Good luck.
