Meds now complete... we have three kids, 5, 7 and 16. Cost was £560 for medicals and £168 for X-Rays.

We went to Horsham, they were really calm about everything, the Doctor was great. I told him that I was worried and he told me that it will be fine. He asked about Canada, what's your job, etc. I got the feeling that he was really just trying to calm everything down.
Filled out the CICS paperwork, all about past medication, sexual diseases, heart trouble, everything was a NO, so no worries.

We did the Doctors exam, which was weight, height, blood pressure and he groped about the chest area, asking me to breath in and out a few times, then Blood test, bottle filling(urine) and more paperwork, permission for HIV tests, then off down the hospital for X-Rays. The wife also said it was really easy, but she was definately relieved to get it over with!

We were in and out of the Doctors within one hour, it was really easy.

Just need to send CIC the landing fee and new Police certs and we need to wait for about TWO months for PPR, let's hoping anyway.

I was stressed in the moring, relieved in the afternoon, now I am just chillin... the light at the end of the tunnel is
getting BIGGER:)

Cheers

Bob

I guess that doesn't sound so bad ...
Hubby is worried 'cos his (and possibly my) weight confirmed on initial application form is somewhat lighter than we are now! Blame it on nervous eating or something, I don't know ...
So, you think PPR in two months ... do you have any idea how long after that you get your visa? Do you know if you will be called for interview? Sorry, soooo many questions!
Cheers!

Amanda

I am a little overweight too:) They are really looking for people being REALLY overweight. I am about TWO stones overweight and trying hard to lose the beef still. I blame it on RED wine!!! Especially last night after the medical!

CIC don't want people with Cancer, HIV, AIDS... things that would cause a strain on the medical system. So blood pressure or heart conditions that already have medication are fine. Although, I have none of these problems, yet, thank god!

Most say two months after medical is PPR, which takes two weeks and then the VISA is available.

CIC called us up and informed us that we are good to go, subject to medical, so if you have med requests, there should be no interview, unless the police checks or medicals fail.

I hope that this helps:)

hello Bob,
congrats on getting your medicals done. i can see how the red wine became a factor. we got our medical request letter today and were so beside ourself with excitement that we just had to drink several alcoholic beverages in quick succession. you can start planning your leaving do now eh?! where do you plan to settle?

Hello and thanks for the congrats! I tried to send you a PM on the BE site, but not sure it's gone through as it is not in my sent items. Good luck with the rest of your process!

Hi Bob (why did I call you Pickles b4??!)
Congrats on getting your medicals done, are you back on the red wine again now? How is the Losing Of The Beef going? We're on a mission now, with a vengeance! We in fact booked health checks with our Dr so we can get a preview of what might come up (cholesterol, heart, weight, etc) and may have time to deal with anything before our 'real' emigration medicals.
Would you be able to email me direct sometime, I have a few questions that are probably too tedious to put on here, but seeing as you're ahead of us in the system, you may know the answers to!?

Congrats, well done. I forgot - are you guys also heading to Toronto? Are you no longer on BE? Are you going down in person to deliver passports?
Posted by MrBob on 01 May 2008
Hi Amanda

I changed my name from RGPickles to Mr Bob, doing the same on BE one day, when I have time.

I'll PM you the medical info.

Bob

Hi gottoronto

My wife became aware of the winter in Ontario, we decided to land in Nova Scotia.
I should be in BE? I'll check.

I think that I might courier the passport and then spend a day in London with the
kids picking all FIVE passports up:)

When are you landing? You must be getting excited by now!!!

Amanda

What's your PM?

Bob
Posted by Gottoronto on 01 May 2008
Must have been a temporary glitch the other day - I sent you a private message now. :-)
Posted by AmandaCAN on 06 May 2008
Hi Bob
I'm starting to get all excited (again, after calming down!), things seem to be moving again ...
My email (if that's what you mean?!) is amanda_robertson@btinternet.com. Would really appreciate hearing all about medicals and the passport situ.
I haven't managed to navigate my way round BE yet (what with mymuchmore and trackitt (then a friend introduced me to the downwards sprial of Facebook, of course nothing to do with emigration but it's a nice deviation when required!), I can't get my head to handle yet another site with more passwords and ID's!!!!
Drop me a line, I'd be grateful.
Cheers

Congratulations. I had my meds a week after yours so hoping to get my ppr soon. Why do you expect your passports back on the 6th June?
Posted by MrBob on 17 May 2008
rgilbert, I emailed them and they returned the request for passports by email... you might want to do this as well?
Posted by AmandaCAN on 17 May 2008
So Bob ... did you email the Embassy a little while after they would have received the med results you mean and what do you actually say to them, did you just confirm you'd had the meds, or saying you'd had the results?
Sounds like a plan ... Thanks for the suggestion!
Oh and more passport pics??? So how many did you actually need? We just all went today and thought we needed around five each, Jessops could only do them in duplicates of four, so we all came away with eight each - that should be enough for medical and passport requests etc??
Also, I noticed on the yellow sheet that came through 'What Happens Next' or something, about the process, that it says your visa is only valid for a year max (I knew that), or as long as your passport remains valid, so when mine runs out in March (I think) next year, all our visas would expire. I guess that means we have to get our asses over there before next March, which we will most definitely be willing and able to do!!!
If you'd rather PM me (I seem tohave too many questions, sorry!), you have my addy, thanks!

Congrats on your visas arriving! Can I tap into your knowledge? I saw on amanda's trackitt page that you got a response from the Embassy to an email in 5 days...what's your secret?!

Doctor has confirmed meds were all clear, sent to them on 21st April.....nothing....emailed on 26th May....nothing...just the automated response....any help much appreciated as have very little fingernails left!

Hi BCRabbit

If you got the confirmation back, then someone should have been on your case.
I would give them until the 13th Friday... hold on might want to email again on
Monday!

I worded my email in a very simple way and I also mentioned that I would appreciate
confirmation of medical results at their CONVENIENCE, these words might help?

Keep it to the point, but also show that you are grateful for their effort and it's at their convenience.

That's all that I can offer, sorry.

Hi Bob
No we haven't 'landed', nor got our permanent resident cards, not even our PPR!!! Have heard precisely nothing from the High Commission since we had our medicals. We called them, once and they couldn't even confirm they'd received the results (although we knew they would have, by then), they said they'd look into the situation and let us know. Zilch since. Have come to Canada, starting the kids in school tomorrow but obviously can only stay six months without the visa. Hubby at home hopes to chase the situ up for us so it all comes together in time for us to stay on. Coming home at Christmas (weren't allowed to book single trip flights without the visa) and hope, when we all come back in the new year, it will be as residents. What are our chance, do you think?! We won't be holding our breath!!
Glad you got house sold - what are your plans now?
A very frustrated AmandaUK

Amanda

I don't believe it, that's REALLY unlucky.

Did you try the medical centre, they should have sent the medical results by courier, they should be able to give you an Air Way Bill no. or evidence that they sent it. Start there and then ask the Canadian Embassey in London. You will be doing their work for them!

That means that the kids will only get six months school, really sorry about that, you must feel really unsettled!

The pooh has hit the fan for us, we expect exchange of contracts in six to eight weeks, I need to resign from my job, find another one, pack up the house, sell the cars... it will be panic central for a few weeks.

I just found out that I need a job for a rental agreement in Ontario. Otherwise, I'll have to pay in FULL! (AHHHH)

Cheers

Hi there Bob
We had established that they had received the medicals, back in June, but hadn't heard anything else since then.
However, today we got our passport request (60 day) letter today - they had sent it earlier but to our old address (and after we'd written giving them a new address!)!!!!
FINALLY. At least now it should (I hope) all come through before Christmas, which means we'll be coming back in January as landed Residents?
Oh my - how are you going to get all that done in that timescale (sorry, I didn't see your 1st Sept posting til now) - exciting but virtually impossible?!! When do you intend to land?
All the best

Amanda

We landed in June already, so we have PR cards in our hands, thankfully.

We have priced up the shipping container, 20ft for about £4200 ish, still negotiating.
We have priced up the dog shipment £1600, I know I though about taking him down the vet, but no he is part of the family now:)
Job hunting now, three companies want to see me when I visit, depending on exchange of contracts.
Need a Canadian Bank account, so HSBC will set this up on exchange.
Found out American Express will carry over credit history, so we will have some history!!! great news there!

So exchange of contracts, RESIGN JOB, fly to Ottawa & Halifax, get interviewed... look at offers, pick a place, find rented accommodation, it will be easy, no worries(Ahhhhh!)

Cheers

Bob

Hi Bob
I just typed you a long email but it rejected - you must have changed your add I guess when you landed?!
We were quoted 2,695 and had a 42 cubic feet container - that's not the final price we paid (I don't have the papers to hand) but gives you an idea. We used GB Liners. They were okay, although we negotiated on the insurance which we thought was pretty high.
Poor dog!!
That's useful about American Express! I wish I could get myself a credit history! I bought our Jeep here five years ago on an interest free credit plan, to give myself a credit history, but have found (bizarrely) that it doesn't do that at all. I have no rating, even though that credit plan is all paid off and there to see in my history! Most odd.
So tell me (ignorant question coming up) - you land, to activate the visa, then did you return to the UK?
You'll cope just fine!
AmandaUK

Hi Amanda

£2695... we might ask them, did they do a good job, did that include the insurance?

The VISA is there to allow you to land, declare your family as immigrants, then you need to go to Customs and Excise and explain that you are landing and they will take you through everything. You need to prepare some stuff first though, like the forms that London give you when you pick up the VISA... it all needs to match everything on the VISA and UK passport, this is VERY import, when you pick up or are sent the VISA, CHECK IT THOROUGHLY.
Also you will need a goods to follow list if anything is coming with you, but you already did this... it allows you to bring stuff in without paying import tax! Very important.
Address that you are staying in Canada, don't handwrite, print it from a computer in biggish letters, teh PR cards are sent to that address.

Once you have landed teh one year VISA expires, that is it's only purpose in life.

When we landed they were very welcoming, we were pleasantly surprised. In fact everyone we spoke to was really nice, not like
in the UK.

On teh British expats WIKI there is a landing check list, it's very useful.

Bob

Yes they did a good job, the insurance was a bit of a battle, I can't remember now how much but it shocked us, so we got them to reduce it. The fact that they could, made us realise they were trying to charge more than they should, for the same cover! You could say we recommended them, then they will be aware of what they charged us, to assist you?!
So, the Visa expiring after a year (you might have told me this before, please be patient, I'm blonde!), do you re-apply for the visa each year until - or if - you apply for citizenship?
Thanks, I'll go and have a look at BE ...
Cheers again
AmandaUK
Posted by MrBob on 02 Oct 2008
No the VISA expiry after a year, means you need to reapply again... 5 years at the moment.
The VISA is a temp VISA, the VISA on landing entitles you to the PR Card. The PR Card is not a
VISA it's like a semi canadian citizenship, it means employers must employ you before anyone else
outside Canada. It's almost citizenship, but not quite!

DON'T PANIC, once you get your VISA, you then LAND and that's it, you can stay in Canada for ever, subject
to renewing the PR card every five years or after 1000 ish day applying to become a Canadian citizen.
