Hey Keralam,

Any idea how long it takes to get OCI in NY?
Also, I will be getting my US passport soon. Need 2 travel to India about 2 months after that.
Do they ask you to give them your US passport? I'm thinking I will apply for OCI and if I don't get it in about 6 weeks I will apply at the Indian consulate for a tourist visa. Is that a safe bet?

Iceman:
I don't know the time frame at NY. My friend who lives in Florida applied and got it in 1 month's time.
You don't give the US passport till they ask for it! It's better to apply for PIO card if you're planning to visit India in 2 months.
If you are a PIO card holder, then you have to pay only $25.00, just for the FEDEX, when you apply for OCI.
My co-worker applied for Visa(Family), which is good for 10 years; they send her son's visa but she hasn't got her's yet ; even after a week since her son got his visa. If you apply for visa, you have to pay the full amount when you apply for OCI, simultaneously, if you apply for PIO card, then you are paying only for the postage.
Hope this helped you out!!
Goodluck

Isn't the PIO card really expensive? Also, how long does it take to get the PIO.
I live in Ohio and would be applying at NY. I have a friend who used to work at that consulate, he said it takes about a month for OCI.

And thanks for the information.

Usually it takes 4 - 6 weeks. Since they outsourced, the time frame will be comparetively less. PIO card use to be $300; after outsourcing it is $365.
By the way I'm in Ohio too....

OK thanks again for the info.
I saw that it can be done in 15 days. I am looking into doing that.
Which city in OH? I am in Cleveland. Interview is next week. How long after the interview can I apply for the US passport?
Posted by Keralam on 01 Nov 2007
You can apply the same day by going to the Post office. You may have to give the original Certifcate of Citizenship to them inorder to process the application. Make sure you keep a copy of the cerificate.
I'm in Solon.

Did you do your swearing in the same day as the interview? I assume you went to Cleveland for the interview.

After the interview, they send you another notification. In my case, it took more than a month, but now the processing is faster; it takes in 2 weeks time.

Hi,
I have been waiting for my acknowledgement from the Indian consulate of NY for my OCI application. I mailed mine in sep first week. They have encahed the check on Oct 2nd. I have still not received any acknowledgement . ANy idea on how to contact the Indian consulate at NY. I have been leaving vioce mails every day... Ialready have my tickets for India in December First week.

Hi Susharv:
If your check has been cashed, certainly they might have acknowledged your case. They acknowledged mine, but haven't cashed the check as of yesterday. You won't get any notification by mail; you may have to check their website: https://passport.gov.in/oci/OnlineOCIenquiry.jsp using your on-line Registration #. In case, if you can't find any info, there is a e-mail contact in the OCI website: shettybn@nic.in
I don't think they'll ever answer your phone calls. You'll be lucky if you get a reply for your e-mail.
Regarding your visit to India, it's better to apply for a visa since the OCI process would take months!
Let me know if your case is acknowledged on line!! Good Luck.

Hi Keralam,
Thanks a lot for the reply. If I have not received anything in mail for acknowledgement by mail How will I know my
USAS number that I need to enter in the enquiry link.
Posted by Keralam on 10 Nov 2007
Hi:
The # you enter in that link (under Online reg. #) is the same # you got when you registered the application online. The # is right on top (in bold letters starting with USAN.......) of the signature space on the application.

Hi Keralam,

Quick question about the swearing in. Mine is in December at the Howard Metzebaum building in Cleveland. Can you tell me how many people I can take to the ceremony - do they check or limit how many folks you can bring?
Also someone mentioned that they have lunch after the ceremony - is that true?
Posted by Keralam on 22 Nov 2007
Hi:
When I sworn in there were no restrictions (5 yrs back). No lunches then. My wife sworn in last month and she said there was some light refreshments.

Thanks Keralam. For your wife's swearing in, were people allowed to bring friends and family?

Hi Mazeb:
Mine took 4 days between granted and Printing Status. Since it is Christmas, it may take a little longer as the embassy is closed!!
Good luck!
