Topic: Help With Landing in Canada and bringing your own vehicle with you
I will be receiving my passport back with the visa in it within the next week and had some landing questions. What do I need to bring with me? Like documents and such. I also have a leased vehicle, I shouldnt have to pay taxes on it right? I am confused at how they do this. I leased the vehicle before I even knew I was immigrating to Canada, but now I am hearing things that I will have to have paperwork for it, etc. I just want to make sure all bases are covered first. Also, my leasing company GMAC has informed me that I can't bring a leased vehicle into another country. Has anyone ever had this problem before? And did you get it resolved or did you have to give up your vehicle? I am told I can register it in Canada, but I first have to have a letter from GMAC stating permission to allow it to be registered there. What a hassel!

When you land you need to have your passport (with your visa), your CORPS and B4-goods to follow inventorty list. You should also give them an address to where they send the PR card. If you don't have an address you can provide them with your address later on.
Before you import the vehical you must export it. In order to export you need to own the car as you need the original title. No financial institute will allow you to export a car owned by the bank. You can't import the car unless it has a valid US CBP export stamp on the title. Although I've read some people on this forum as sucessfully imported a car that wasn't exported - but they have comitted an illigal export and may get arrested and charged for auto theft as soon as they go back to the US.
If you just got the car and can't afford to pay it off in full, a possible alternative for you is to transfer the lease to GM Finance Canada. Give it a try.

So you have to give them an address for PR card, okay yeah we have an address there. So can I go ahead and get my SIn number even though I dont have my PR card, because all I need is my COPR correct?
I contacted insurance companies and MTO in Ontario and they said I can insure and register a leased vehicle from the U.S. and that they do it all the time. The MTO requires a written permission letter stating the lease can be registered there though, that is the issue at hand. I mean, you can't have a title if you don't own the vehicle, I wonder if something else would suffice?
Do you have to pay any fees when you export/import or taxes/duties anything like that? I hope not...a few is reasonable, but not taxes...
We tried to get the lease transferred to GM Canada, but they say they cant or wont transfer the lease as it was leased in the U.S. Have you heard of someone doing this in the past?

You can get a SIN with your landing papers, passport and address - not PR card required. You'll get a SIN number right away and the actual card will be mailed to you within 2 weeks.
If you don't have the title you need a letter from GMAC saying they allow you to exoprt the car. This letter may be difficult to get. Check CBP.gov for full details.
No taxes for the vehical is due upon landing. You need to pay a small adim fee to RIV (less then $200) plus e-test, saftey test and provincial registration fee - but no taxes or duty. Make sure you have your copy of the B4 you'll get from Customs or they will try to charge you tax when you register the vehical.
I have never heard of anyone transferring a lease - just a long shot from my side. I thought it made sense... Maybe you need to sell the car a finance a new car on the other side of the border - or by a cheap car that will take you a cross...

I've been in touch with GMAC and they wont give a letter or anything, just keep sayng that the lease cannot be removed from the country. I think the dealership should have to pay the payoff on the truck because they were the ones that got us into this mess in the first place. So it looks like I will have to give up the truck and try to find a cheapo used to get me over to canada and to get around for awhile until i can establish some credit to buy another. what a pain!!
So the only payment I will have to make at landing will be the RIV fee? Then the rest (emission, saftey) I will have to get done once I get over there within a time period correct? How do you export it through the U.s. if you are coming up to the border through the U.S., you hit the canadian side, not U.s.? Also, I read somewhere that you have to bring or send your title for your vehicle 72 hrs. prior to crossing, is this correct or what you did? I dont feel comfortable sending my original title, when I could just bring it with me and give it to them that day...
Is there anything else I should know? So I take it you have already crossed and landed in Canada? Also, do they search all the stuff that you are brining with you, or do they just go over the B4 form that you have listed everything coming, and then another with stuff to come?

You need to fax your title to the US CBP 72 hrs prior to crossing the border. Don';t send the origianal title - you will need that when you register your car in Canada. US CBP will only date stamp your title and record your VIN as exported.
True - it's somtime tricky to actually stop at the US side before you drive into Canada. Call the US CBP office where you will exit and ask for direction. Sometime the broker's offices are at a different location. Also ask for the hours. You can usually import into Canada 24/7, but only export during business hours. I learned that the hard way coming to the export office past midnigh. Also bring the fax transcript as a proof you did fax it. The US guys can a bit harsh sometimes.
They don't usually search through your stuff on the Canadian side unless they suspect you're not honest. I had a 26' U-haul parked out-side and they didn't even care. They only looked through my B4. However, they did walk out to my car to verify the VIN number, make/model and colour.

So it turns out I have to send the original title 72 hrs. in advance to the point of entry where I will be crossing. Then they have it there for us when we get there. The person I was talking with told me that they would verify the information, then they would inspect the vehicle. If everything turns out ok, then I can proceed to Canadian side. From there, they will import the vehicle. I found online that you have to obtain a recall clearance letter as well, to show that your vehicle is up to date on recalls. What a pain!
Also, can you just type out an inventory of your goods, rather than fill in the b4? I printed it out and there isnt much space to list everything, so I thought I would type one up on my own.

Getting a recall clearence letter isn't a big deal. I drive a GM and went to the nearest GM dealer and got one. If you drive a Nissan go to a Nissan dealer in town. It'll take you 5 min. Getting it once you're in Canada may be a bit difficult though - yet not impossible.
You can give them a separate inventory list. True, the B4 doesn't have much room. My inventory list was 14 pages long...

Yeah I just called Subaru and they said that they can print one right up for me, so that is good. How specific does the list have to be? Do you have to name every little item that you bring, or can you generalize some of them? LIke bathroom products, etc? I understand about the electronics, furniture, etc. and listing them with their serial numbers, but if I listed every little thing I am brining with me, I would have a novel!! lol...do I include the car on the list as well?

We listed everything just to be sure, but group certain things such as kitchen ware, clothings etc. Definatly put the car (with VIN) on the list or you may have to pay taxes and duty when you register it in your province.
