Topic: Landing question

I was wondering when I land to Canada from US, would I need to pay tax or customs on valuable stuff such as cars, computers, other electronics????
Thank you,

Grag,

As far as I have read on the web, there is no tax on the items you are bringing with you. Infact, you can prepare the list and take some of those items later also with you to Canada trips. However for car, you may have to pay some Canadian auto taxes (not sure though).

I encourage other guys to update in this regard and also suggest you to take a look at internet for this information.

I have a question related to landing. Can i land in Vancover, BC and provide my friend's address in Toronto, ON for the PR and SIN cards? Is this acceptable by the immigration officers?

AmericanDesi,

There should no problem with this. However going back to Canada, once you are back to US, needed a travel document. I guess immigration officer at landing station will explain that also.

Thought I'd add my landing experience to anyone who may find it helpful:

On a valid H1-B in the US, flew to Vancouver from Philadelphia May 25, 2008
Didn't go through regular immigration booths, went in to the immigration main office.
Went to the welcome booth, picked up info. on SIN and Medical insurance.
Took a number for an immigration officer (the wait time was 5 mins)
Gaver her my passport and COPR

Questions asked:
Are you still studying in the US? No (she was looking at an old F-1 visa)
How much $ do you have in your pockets? $200
How much $ are you bringing in? Gave her my US bank statement
Are you sending any goods? How? Yes by ship (gives me details on how to make an appointment with a customs officer once my goods arrive. I didn't need to submit a goods to follow list. You show the list once the goods arrive.)
Do you have an address in Canada? Gave her my friend's address in Toronto
Do you have a phone number? Gave her my cell phone number which works in Canada as well
Have you deported/convicted of a crime? No

Cancels my immigrant visa, attaches a copy of the COPR (which we both signed), says that my PR card will be mailed in 6 weeks (yes 6, not 4) and that if I leave the country before the PR arrives I'd need a visa to re-enter.

Left Vancouver, back to Philly 2 days later. US immigration asked me why I was in Canada. Its none of their god damn business, so I told them I was visiting friends (which is partly true cos I did in fact visit friends!)

Smooth landing, took 10 minutes to complete. Waiting for my PR card now. Any specific questions THAT I HAVE NOT ALREADY COVERED, I'd be happy to answer. Good luck all!

jay24boston.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Very helpful, but I would like to ask you a few more questions, if you don't mind?
I'm still waiting on my passport to be returned from the buffalo visa office, and once I get it I will do the landing process with my family. My questions are:

1- how long is the stamped visa valid for?
2- Do I need any travel document to reenter Canada after landing and coming back from the U.S?
3- Did the U.S IO ask you something when he/she saw your canadian immigrant visa stamped on your passport?
4- Do you know if it's better landing by air or car?

If you look at my profile, you'll see that I have a pending process here in the U.S. and I don't want the landing process to interfere with the process I already have here in the U.S. I've seen a recent case here in trackitt (faama's case), She did the same thing you did and that I'm plannig to do, but she wasn't that lucky cause she was denied to reenter at the U.S border because the IO saw the Canadian immigrant visa stamped on her passport and he/she revoked the AP and the I-485. If you can go to the I-485 forum and search for the topic (PAINFUL SITUATION) them you'll know a little bit more of what I'm talking about. My friend, if you can answer to any of my questions above, will be really appreciated.
Let me know based on your experience, if I should go for it, or what would be the best choice for me and my family at this moment?. Thanks!
Note: My H1B is already expired and I'm traveling on advance parole.

After landing any other formalities to be carried out for the PR process.

If planning to return within a week, is it OK, or do I need to stay for some minimum days after the first landing.
Do I need to apply for driving licenese
or take a health insurance etc.

Any advise or information is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

1) One year from the date you did your medicals.
2) If you leave Canada without your PR card, you need to wait until you receive it in the mail to re-enter. If you can't wait, get a returning resident permit from a canadian consulate. Remmember, your immigrant visa is only valid for ONE entry.
3) I already answered this. And no they didn't see my Canadian immigrant visa.
4) You can land by air, car, bicycle, horse back, its your personal choice.

There is a chance that US IO may not look at your Canadian immigrant visa too favorably (that is only if they see it. I had a passport full of visas, I myself have trouble finding anything in there, yet alone an immigration officer who is looking at it for the first time!)
