Topic: USA to Canada
I spend 4 years in Canada and got my Canadian passport. Life in Canada is miserable. I can only find Postdoc kind of jobs. No decent job could be found. Everything is so expensive including passport and tax is much higher. Now I have to apply US green card. I found life in US is much easier. However, maybe I will return to Canada when I get old and take advantage the free medicare.

Hi, eternity,
Have you landed yet? How is your landing experience? could you share it with us? Are you back to the US now?
Thank you

Hello everyone,
I have been missing in action for a while.
Yes we landed . Went by road to Toronto. It was really very very easy and simple.
We crossed over at the Buffalo border on a weekend. Immigration posts at various are open 24/7 and so you can and at any time even on a Sunday. Google Canada border services orhanization and you will get the website. Very useful for landing info.
The guy at the checkpost looked at our passports and asked us to proceed to the Immigration and customs. He joked with us saying we would definitely like Canada better.
At the immigration office the lady took our forms and passports. These forms were the ones received in mail - one for each family member. Although it was mentioned that we needed to get our photographs (getting them was the most painful part) but she did not ask for them at all. She asked us we would be moving now and I said no we need to wrap up some pending assignments and most importantly we will move after kids school term is over.
That is all . At the customs then we were asked for the List of Goods to follow. We had a sketchy list and found out that once it is stamped anything else we bring will be taxed a new item and then we will have to pay customs duty. So we hurriedly addded some more items that he only suggested.
We were done in like 30 minutes but just hung on asking them how to go to Niagara Falls on the Candian life.
Everything was very welcoming.
We then proceeded to my friends place who had suggested that we stay and apply for our Social Insurance cards as well. This has to be done at a local employment center. We went Monday and completed that in another like 30 minutes. again very organized.
As I write the SIN cards have been received by my friend whose address I had given.
So far my experience with the Canadian authorities has been the exact opposite of dealing with the US clerks.
Hope this helps.

Ok for jobs te online sites are:
Monster Canada
Workopolis - the best
Craigslist too can be useful
Yahoo Canada has a jobsite that is good too.
There are others for IT jobs that I know and you can always google for recruiters in Canada. People like Robert Half are there in Canada.
The other good place to network is on Linkedin. You can search for jobs there too.

I have not anyone in Canada saying that their life is miserable, even though to me it felt like the cost of living was pretty high, people generally tell me it is much less stressful life than here.
Again this is all very very personal and subjective to your individual status in life.
The GC process for Canadia citizens might be better but again is entirely dependent on your getting job and that means H1 and that as you know is a lottery now. Much playing lotto.

i had a DUI 5yrs ago, i have been on H1B for almost 4yrs. Based on the point system my score is between 75-79.
Would my hx of DUI automatically disqualify me for a canadian PR or do i stand a reasonable chance.
|
As far as I know DUI should effect your application, however it is good idea to contact to a lawyer about this matter. I also heard if you get pardon from the sate you get DUI, it will not effect your application procedure
Good Luck

Another thoought, apply FBI report and police report from state live if it is clear it DUI should not really matter
Hopefully this will help

Dude, don't you know that when you get old (over 65) you get free medicare in the US (as long as you have worked 10 years in the US). The problem with medical coverage in the US, is when you are working not once you are retired.
If you are looking to "game" the system, then being a self-employed consultant in Canada is the way to do it (while of working age). You get healthcare the equivalent of which would be practically un-affordable in the US, yet you can deduct a portion of your mortgage (if you business is home based), as well as your car, business lunches and supplies, and you can serve customers anywhere in the US as well (on a business visa).
If you can handle the weather, it is the best gig going...

I got my canadian PR in March 2005, the date I landed in Canada. But the PRcard says it expires on May 2010. I live in US now, working. Can I still go to Canada in May 2008, complete 2 yrs residency requirements before it expires in May 2010.?

I dont think there should be any problem in going to Canada. Have faith and go ahead :)

This is very interesting topic. Eternity, I read your posts and it looks like you had a wonderful experience. I am planning to go in a month or two, but have not been able to make any decision on where to go quite yet.
which one would ya'll recommend as far as odd jobs availability ( like working in a library, hospital or some side job while going to school), cost of living ( how much is 1 bedroom apt in toronto, Vancouver, calgary), transportation ( we are not thinking to take our car to canada, we heard insurance there is 3000/year(???, which city has better transportation, how much does it cost, Which place has better health plans, how much is the waiting time, how about loans for college, or is there such thing need-based deal where you dont have to payback. In terms of all these issues, which is the better place to immigrate to?
Do I need to put every little thing down on my " to bring" list when i am entering canada? Or is it just " big" things like car, furnitures, etc? How about bank balance? How much are we allowed to take, and do we have to put that on a list too?
Thanks much!

Hello, am stuck in a dilemma and hoping anyone could share their experience. I was told by a friend that Medicals would expire after a year. My medicals were done in Jun 07' and I am scared that they would expire unless I hear back from Buffalo before that time... Is this expiration correct?? Does anyone knows?
|
yes medicals are only valid for 1 year. if you dont hear from them within that timeframe, you will be asked to do the medicals again. I am in a similar situation and my medicals will expire end of july

Glad to see this discussion, I am Canadian, trying to get GC for US for 5 years now, giving up. More than that actually, sick of the politics here. Anyway now trying to get GF into Canada, marriage is not an option.
Very pleased to see how clear the website is from immigration Canada. It was much more guessing 25 years ago when I moved from Europe to Canada.
Am I correct with an estimate of about 18 months for the whole process? Is there a way to speed it up in case you have a prearranged job waiting?
Thank you all
Canada is a great place to live.

Yes...............an HRDC authorized job opening will acelerate the Canadian PR paperwork for Fed Sk Wrkr. Going from a Canadian work pemit to FSW is also feasible.
And Canada prefers married applicants rather than single applicants. Married folks that apply .w immaculate paperwork, from a westernized country (USA, EUROPE) will get thro less than 14 months!
Another way of accelerating the PR is apply for a provincial PR, and then get into Canada, and apply for FSW.
I am trying to move to Canada for a hitech job similar to what I am doing in the USA......Lets s how things roll for me! :-)
