Topic: Landing experience
Posted by IndianMunda (563) 01 Sep 2008
I went for landing yesterday on Seattle - Vancouver: Peace Arch border. Here is the experience...

Reached @ border arnd 10:30 AM. Submitted the passports to officer incharge.

Officer1: Where you stay in US?
Me: location

Officer1: Why you coming to Canada?
Me; for landing

Officer1: How many days are your intended to live?
Me: for couple of days

Officer1: Why not staying here?
Me: looking for a job / transfer from my current employer. As soon as it will be done, will be here

She smiled and said Ok. Asked me to park the car and went insider office to complete landing procedure. Also wrote a slip indicating that I am here for landing.

Next, I went inside office and reached @ designated counter.

Officer2: What is the purpose for your Canada visit?
Me: Landing

Officer2: Give me the address where you planning to live?
Me: I will be going back in couple of days. Just came to complete landing.

Officer2: Ok, then we will not be mailing your PR cards as we need an address where you will stay. This is needed for security reasons. We cannot mail to anyone else the cards.

Me: Ok. No prob.

Officer2: When are you planning to come here for good?
Me: Looking for a job / transfer from current employer. As soon as I gets, will be here.

Officer2: Ok. Starting today you have 2 years to settle down here. Please take a seat and will call you again.

She did some paperwork. Checked with another officer and then called me again. She asked me to sign on COPR. Separated the copies and attach one copy on my passport. Same for wife and kid.

Me: So this COPR is valid for two years?
Officer2: Yes

Me: What about coming to Canada again?
Officer2: Just show this attached COPR.

She gave us 3 Canadian flags and 3 badges. Also gave form for specifying the goods. She told me that I can bring this list once I am coming to settle. Also gave one document which has some information about what to do now - SIN, Insurance etc. I asked if they need to see the money I am bringing to Canada. They said if you will transfer / wire from a bank to a Canadian bank - we will be notified automatically. So no need to see this.

Thats all!!! I was in Canada for whole day. Came to US side in evening.

Officer1: Where you live?
Me: US location

Officer2: Why you went to Canada?
Me: For landing

He looked at my visa, swiped and gave back.

This was all for me. I was back without hitch!!! Let me know if anyone needs any more information.

Congratulations. You are finally at the end of this long process! I hope you will keep visiting trackitt to offer advice and suggestions. Do you know when you would consider moving?

Did your wife and kid accompany you on this trip? Do they have to?

Gaveuponusgc,

Thnx!!! Since there are 2 FULL years, I will be taking my chance to be there ;). I just got a new job and my GC process is going to start. However I will be going sometime this year to get my PR cards - I will submit a Canadian address at that time.

Yeah my wife and kid accompanied me on the trip. However this is not mandatory - they can go after primary applicant landed. However everyone must land prior the visa expiring date. Also the primary applicant needs to be with them.

Let me know if there is any other question!!!

inimd,

COPR is a document which will be provided to you once the visa is stamped. This document is the confirmation about your PR until you get the PR card. Using this doc one can travel as many times to Canada (only using CAR). For any other means of transport - you need to get a travel document.

All this information is available at http://cic.gc.ca

Hello,
Can we do the landing process on Saturday/Sunday and return back on the same day? I am planning to do through Seattle-Vancouver way. Do we need to apply for SIN when we just land itself or can we do it when we go for good. Please advice?

Hi IM,

Thanks so much for sharing.
I have aquestion. You said the officer specified that you could not give an address in CAnada to send the PR . Did they specify that you could not do so under any circumstance ? (say it was a family friend or something and not a hotel?)

Did they tell you how you can pick up the card since they will not mail it to you ?

I would so appreciate the answer

regards

I thought there are theoreticaly 3 years to settle. You have to live 2 years out of each 5 year period in order to keep the PR in Canada. Please correct me if I missed anything.

The only way to pickup/mail card is that you should be in Canada physically (thats the ideal case ;) ). So I am planning to be in Canada for sometime and get the PR card.

That is correct. The only thing I am not sure is if they will extend such scenario after 5 years - What I mean to say is that within 10 years if one is staying only 4 years to maintain his/her PR ship - officers may have reason to scrutiny that why you dont wanna live in Canada BUT ONLY MAINTAIN PR as a backup :)

Yep i know i will have to be there to pick up the card. So is it like they will give me a date on which the card can be picked up? or is can they post it to my friend's house and i can pick it up later ?

I mean is it a precise date that the card can be picked up on?

I cannot take leave from my current project for an extended period right now ......... hence all these questions.

would be grateful for any detail IndianMunda

cheers

Ok. Looking at http://cic.gc.ca, I have seen that you can provide an address when you are intended to stay there within 3 weeks. Total duration for PR card is something between 4 - 6 weeks (based upon what I have observed). So you MAY have to get a leave for 1 - 3 weeks (to complete 6 weeks).
I also had an update from consulate indicating that I can enter Canada using my car without any travel document. I am planning to update address just before a month of my planned leave. Incase I get PR card at the provided address w/o my travel, I will not go. But if I have to go - I am ready with couple of weeks of vacation in my hand.

Hope all this help. Else let me know if there is any more query :)

hmmm ... thanks IM that helped pal....

Sorry if i sound dense but .... what i need to know is ...
will it be possible to do the following:

1> Fly in to Toronto and apply for my PR card at the airport (you have already said this is possible .. right?)
2> come back the next day
3> give an address in Toronto to send the PR card to (without me being there)
4>when they send the card to the address fly in again to pick it up (without actually having to sit there waiting for the card)

as i cannot drive the only option for me to fly and its 250$+ each trip :O(

so all these queries !!!!!!!

thanks for your patience !!!

Replies....

1> You can do so. However usually they ask u JUST an ADDRESS. So do not mention anything but give address. Dont say my friend' address or something.
2> Yes you can.
3> This should be used if on "1" you had some trouble. You can specify the address but I will suggest to have atleast 5 - 10 days in your hand. As I mentioned, using this option means you are (ideally) planning to stay in Canada ;)
4> You have to apply for travel doc in this case. I have no idea that what is the validity for a travel doc. It should be something between 1 - 6 months. You can use this travel doc only once to enter Canada. So better be prepared to stay there till getting PR card, if use this option.

I am sure that you can also walk by (w/o travel doc), if there is such border near to your location. If so, you can enter in Canada as many time as you want.

Your friend can always mail/FedEX you the card. You dont have to go the second time to pick it up. As IndianMunda said, if you fly back you would need travel documentation from the CHC.

As you may know every country have different rules. In some countries you cannot send passports across borders, in others thats not an issue. PR card can be sent from Canada to the US. I would suggest using FedEx, UPS, DHL. And signed for service.
