Topic: Importing a car
Posted by IndianMunda (563) 06 Sep 2008
Have anyone imported a car to Canada? If yes, can you update about the additional cost one has to pay for completing import process. Assuming that Car is of 20,000 USD - what will be additional cost one need to bear?

You have to pay about $200 for inspection fee (www.riv.ca). Does not depend on value of car.

Hi Indian Munda
You have to pay importing fee which 180. Plus the they will 6 or 7 % duties you on Canadian market value. You have to pass safety and emission before you apply for tag ( which is around 200). When you go to get tag it is another 6 or 7 % but if your car is European they add 6 % more. If you are landing you do not have to pay duties. But if you need more information here is

I actually landed and officers didnt ask anything about importing car or items. So if I am understanding correcly - I need to pay roughly 10% of the car on duties i.e. 2000. Or are you saying that I can still submit my request for importing the car and this 10% will not be applicable.

When you land you do not have to pay any duties on car. But if you import after you landed you have pay duties on your car. You may end up paying 6 or 7% for tags. Just to be on safe side you can call above no. They can give you exact figure.
Hopefully this will help.

A friend of mine landed last year. He was told as long as the car has been reported on the list of good to follow then you do not need to pay customs. If you did not report on the list of goods, then you need to pay them. I hope this helps.

Thanx Grag,

As I mentioned above in discussion - the officers didnt ask me to submit the list of items also. They told me that I can submit when I am coming to Canada for good.

Also I am planning to buy a new car. Since I already landed so can I include this item as I am buying after landing? Interesting stuff!!! I love to get some pointer :)
