Okay this is my second attempt to find out if
anyone has re-entered canada (before receiving PR) by car with their COPR only
or
anyone has re-entered canada after only staying there for couple days after landed and returned to US with PR Card?
Please share your experiences as i need to visit canada sometime soon and i haven't received my PR yet?

can you please share your experience with landing in canada..i am landing in canada on oct 5th..and planning to return to US after a few days
I was told by one of my friends that I wont be allowed to get out of toronto through an 'airport' if i dont have PR card in hand..
could this be true? i know people who returned by car but none by air
thanks

landing was very simple. the officers were very friendly.
they asked for my bankstatement, they noted it down on the COPR and told me to keep the COPR somewhere safe.
Asked for the address to where the PR would be mailed and said it would take about 30 days. Gave them my friends address.
coming back was easy.
I am on H-1b visa. Seeing my old I-94, the officer asked my purpose of trip to canada. i said to visit a friend.
that was it. simple.

Stara,
Did you get any update from consulate? What are you planning to do?
|
IndianMunda,
I emailed the consulate regarding my situation. They emailed me right way statin that i need a travel document.
I got my travel document early this week, but only one entry. hopefully i'll have PR card in hand after that.
|
Alright,
So that means one needs a travel document to re-enter Canada (even by Car!!!)
Thanks Stara

Stara,
Also can you update if the travel doc has any expiry date? Say if I take this now but plan to go in in Nov - is there any deadline to use the doc?
|
I contacted with Consulate but looks like travel doc is when using commercial transport. Can you confirm Stara that you asked for car and they asked you to take the travel doc??
|
I cross the border all the time (have not got my PR card yet) and it works fine as long as you have your laning papers and travel in your own car. As you stated, you only need travel docs if you travel by commercial transport. It may also have to do with what passport you have (if you require a visa to either US/Canada)? I don't need an entry visa to either country so maybe thats why I can come and go as I want?

Great news!!!!
I hope there should not be any problem even incase of a rental car....I have a H1 visa for US so no issue entering there and for Canada I have landed papers
Thanks much GGKK

I asked the embassay specifically regarding "travelling by car". They said i need to apply travel doc regardless.
|
I am really confused here :(
Anyhow...can you share if there is any expiration date on travel doc?? If yes, how long this is valid?
|
Stara - you should follow thier instructions if that is what they told you. I cross the border without it, but I should also meantion that I have crossed the border, somtimes daily, over so many years, some US officers and Canadian officers even know me by first name, and I know them.

Guys,
I got an update from Consulate today - if one is travelling from private carrier (car) s/he needs only passport and proof abt status in Canada. No need of travel document.
I am planning to go to Vancouver by car and will not apply for travel doc :)
Stara, initially they told me that I need travel document if travelling by a commercial transport. They didnt reply me abt private carrier. Today they replied and update what I mentioned above.
