so i applied for canadian residency back in july 2006. i'm hoping to hear something back by this july. should i just go ahead and get my medicals done? that way, i can save some time.

I wouldn't be too hopeful for hearing something by this July. We applied in November 2005 and nothing further has happened apart from AOR. Looking just at others on this website, it seems to be 2 or 3 years before the medical is required/obtained, so might not be a good thing to do one too long in advance. That's just my opinion though, for what it's worth!

Response time of the consulate depends on the country of application.

yeah thanks for the responses guys. i applied from within the US (I think I sent my application to Buffalo...I think). i do believe the average time is 12 months to hear back. someone correct me if i'm wrong.

Yes, it takes an average of 1 yr for buffalo to get back to you, they might either transfer your file to another consulate or ask for more docs or send you the medical docs with IA.
You might be better off to stay as you may need some documents from the consulate to take to the DMP for the exam. Hey relax and enjoy the wait. Also, your landing date cannot be more than a yr after your medical.
Take care

can u tell me the processing time to get the PR too.

Afraid you cannot do the medical exam until you get the form from CIC. 12 months is possible but a bit optimistic for Buffalo these days. Mine took 15 1/2 months from AOR to IA... I think it depends upon where the application is processed and how complex it is. Hang in there though, it'll happen soon enough!
