Topic: Maximum Points without IELTS
I have applied for Skilled labor immigration in Buffalo and received a request to take IELTS. I have 8 years exp in IT with 5 years USA experiance and did schooling and engineering from India in English. Lets assume that I provided all sufficient evidences about my English skill e.g. letters from college, school, employer etc. If I do not submit my IELTS, what will be the maximum mark I will get in English Skill? I am hoping for 12...

They asked me the same even though i provided them with my TOEFL score taken in 1998 and living in US since then and finished my masters degree in US. I wrote a hand written letter in resonse to their query saying that i wouldnt pursue the whole PR thingy if they bug me to take IELTS... I am not sure how many points they reduced or added , I simply received a mail in about 4 or 5 months to take medical etc... I guess you could do the same explaining your education and your stay in US, they would simply approve. No need to worry about points. Thats my take

I also received a letter requesting I take IELTS even though I supplied statements from my employer, college, and myself. I was not born in the U.S. but have lived in the U.S. for 24.5 of 26 years. Just in case they don't give me the benefit of the doubt I plan on taking the IELTS in March. Hopefully the British accents won't throw me off.

Good luck for your IELTS...
I am not going to take the IELTS...Let's see whether I am lucky or not :))

I'm not going to take IELTS either but I'm sending documents instead. One of my friends did not submitt IELTS either and he got only 8 pts "Moderate". I have seen in other forums people confirming this. I advise you to take IELTS if u r looking for more pts.
|
What kind of documents are you going to submit? Do you think you will get more than 8 points without IELTS?
|
I'm a graduate student in Canada. I will be sending: - My TOEFL score - Letter from my supervisor - Copy of research paper written by me - A letter explaining all the above - and Offcourse, Canadian transcripts
No, I do not think I'll get more than 8 pts, I based my calculations on 8 pts only.

If you are at least 16 points above the 67 cut-off points, then yes, I'd advise you to write a letter telling them you will not take the test like becomingGandalf did, or write letters supporting your 'English Skills'
HOWEVER, if you know you need all your points, then simply do not gamble but instead, comply and take the darn test. The test is easy for skilled English speakers, it's relatively inexpensive, and best of all, it secures your language points!
If you do not take the IELTS, you are essentially asking the Officer to use THEIR discretion (or mood) in awarding you points. I have seen cases where US PhD holders were awarded anywhere from 0-8 points - per discretion ie depending on the IO's mood. The net is that, there are times in life to haggle, and there are other times to simply comply - to your advantage.
I grew up in an English speaking environment, completed education in an Ivy League, yet I complied since I don't want to play with my points for the FSW. I took the test so that it is not left to discretion or PMS or something like that....
Good luck.

Friends,
For Canada Immigration purpose, do we need to take the "General Training" test or "Academic" test of IELTS? Is there a benefit in taking the "Academic" test?
|
General Training is required.

I did my BS in the States and MS in Canada but they still ask for IELTS. If you want 16 point, I would suggest you to take exam. It is an easy exam. A friend of mind was in similar situation, he was awarded only 8 ponit despite of having BS and MS from the States and 8 year work experience in North America.

This has been discussed many times on the forum. Why anyone applying in skilled category is sooooo lazy to not give this test? Its very easy and can get 16 points. I would say smart people will go and appear for test instead of checking this again and again on different forums.

I got a score of 7, 7.5, 6 and 8 in listening, reading, writing and speaking respectively and an overall 7.0. Can anybody advise howmany points I get for this score. Thanks in advance.
|
You have a total of 14/16 and without french you will be scores 14/24 as french is total of 8 depending on first or secodn language.
first language is 16
second language is 8
making a total of 24
Btw 7-9 score you get 4
and bte 5-6.9 you get 2
so yours will be
Listening-4, reading- 4, writing- 2 and speaking - 4 making a total of 14/16 for ur first language

I also didn't take the IELTS and received medical yesterday. Does it mean that my total point is 67 or more ? I was planinng to take the IELTS test end of August but I gues I don't need it now. Thanks
