Topic: Canada Landing Question
Hi
I have to complete landing formalities before March 2nd 2008. I'm planning to land through Detroit-Windsor Bridge on March 1st 2008.
Can I land during weekend?
If anyone recently had landing experience, can you plz share your knowledge?
|
i am planning to do that next weekend. Can you let me know how yours went!!
Thanks Much
|
Yes, please post your experience of landing through the detroit-windsor bridge in detail. I plan to do that shortly.
Also, I have a few other questions hopefully fellow members can help answer?
What all do we need to do after landing to complete formalities before we can come back to US?
Since, I don't plan to stay there for more than a couple of days, what should I do about the PR card? Can I give a friend's address in Toronto so that they can mail that to me when it arrives? Is that ok to do? Has anyone done that and faced no problems while going back to Canada with the PR Card?
Can I do the same for applying SIN and Medicare cards?
Any other formalities that we need to do for establishing permanent residence?
|
Following is my experience...
Immigration officer asked me the reason for my visit. (Landing as permanant resident)
He asked for passports that contain Visa. After some data entry in computer he gave me a yellow sheet and passports and asked me to go the Immigration/Customs building on the right hand side.
I parked my car their and went to the immigration office.
Officer there asked me for passport, COPR forms and asked for an address in Canada to mail PR card. I gave my friend's addres (No other questions asked)
Went to Customs counter and fill up form for GOODS to Follow. Asked if I'm going to bring a car in Canada (No)
That's it...It was very quick and both the officers were very helpful.
I spent few hours in Windsor and came back through bridge. No issues there either. Few questions asked...like
Why are you driving a rental car?
Do you have a house in Canada?
Where do you work and how do you commute to your office?
|
Thanks for posting your experience. Could you also, provide info on your experience re-entering US? Did they cause any problems? I have heard that they some times cause issues if the car registration is not in your name as would be the case in rental.
Also, why did you take rental and not your own vehicle? is there any benefit in doing that? Are there any hassles, with using your own car?
Did you apply for SIN or Health Card?
Appreciate your response. Thanks and Cheers for successful landing!
|
Thanks or posting your experience. I have the same question as to why you are not taking your own vehicle and taking a rental vehicle instead ?
Thanks
|
You can take your own vehicle if you plan to import it into Canada when you permanantly move. I don't plan to take my current vehicle to Canada when I move. If you take your own vehicle, you may have to complete Vehicle import formalities adding to cost and documentation.
|
I did not apply for SIN or health card. No problem while re-entering US. I spent couple of hours in Windsor and then came back through Bridge.

Hi, h74shah:
When you go to Canada? Did you do it very recently?
Thank you for the sharing the info.
|
h74visa & nachi,
Congrats!
Can u pls confirm, in how many business days did Canadian Immig take to mail the PR cards to your addresses in Canada.
My friend landed in Calgary 2 months back, and flew back to USA in 4 days or so. His friends address in Calgary received the PR card in almost 30 days.....a whole month!!!
|
I think it took more than 5 weeks for me to get the cards.
|
Nachi & other "Landed Immigrant" experts,
Assuming my Canadian Immig visa expires on Aug-15, 2008, and I land in Ontario on Aug-1, 2008, apply for PR card & SIN card giving my friends Toronto address, and leave back to USA on the same day.
(1)What if Canadian Immig does not mail the PR card but sends a letter in mail asking me to come in person for collecting the PR card, after 30 days or so? Wont I be screwed if my CAD Immig Visa wudv'e expired by then? Will the Canadian Immig at POE allow me entry without my PR card? Cos one isnt supposed to leave Canada without the PR card.
I tried searching in other forums, and havent come across any answers!
|
When you go for stamping they give you landing document which you can use to go back and forth till you get your card in hand. So it should not be a problem.

nachi,
Thanq 4 ur prompt response. were u refering to the COPR as the landing paper? I hope that dus not have any expiry.
And did u use AP H1-B visa to re-enter USA? If u had used H1B visa, did the US-CBP officer stamp ur Passport on re-entry, on the same I-94 that was stuck on ur passport when u landed in Canada, rite ?
|
the COPR am not sure if it had an expiry date or not... I am on H1 so i just was let through with the same I 94 .. but my wife was on h4 with EAD peprs and had to be Advanced paroled in.

Lucky u that the the US-CBP officer/CBSA agent did not harass ur wife for having applied for both US-GC & Cad-PR.
I checked /w another friend that landed in Feb-08, and his COPR paper is valid till 2010!
And if worst case, CICS decides to make my life miserable by sending a letter to my c/o canadian address requesting my presence for issuing CAD-PR, and if my CAD-Immig visa had already expired by then, I can still enter Canada using my COPR, only by a car.........or lets say.................a nice evening walk on the Rainbow bridge!

I have been living in US for 10 years now. As you can imagine I probably have a full house of stuff to take to Canada when I complete the landing process.
Can anyone tell me from experience or maybe heard from friends about the valuable stuff such as cars, computers, furniture ect if the canadian customs charge tax on it when landing is complete???
Thanks,
|
Grag,
I have replied for this in a different thread initiated by you. Can you check there?

You can move your whole house to Canada, if u live in a house with wheels i.e. camper trailer.

hello all -
Has anyone landed in canada through detroit recently? Can you share your experience?
Would also like to check if anyone has personally appeared at the Detroit Renaissance Center consulate to get their passport stamped, and if they can share their experiences.
Thanks,

Hi MiyaBhai,
To answer your some of your questions:
1. If you land at a major port of entry you should have no problem on a weekend, however you might want to contact the Border Services Agency to confirm. Their contact info can be found on the following link: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/contact/general-generaux-eng.html
2a. You can apply for the SIN card immediately, however it will take 1-2 weeks to receive it in the mail. (They will give you your SIN number that same day though)
2b. Depending on the Province, you will need to complete a waiting period before becoming eligbile for Health insurance. In BC it was 2 months after the the end of whatever month you happen to arrive in. You can apply right away to get your info on file, but they won't send you the card until you have completed the waiting period.
3. I don't have enough expertise to answer this one, however you might be able to find what you are looking for in one of the US immigration forums.
Hope that is helpful!

Nachi.
mine is a similar situation as yours..I am on H1b and my wife was on h4 but used AP to return to US from her india trip..
do you have a valid H1 stamp on your passport? or did you use AVR
thanks
|
Fellow Immigrante:
AVR is still valid!!! Last month, my paki friend after landing in Canada, re-entered USA (1000 islands bridge) using her current H1B I-797 (valid till May 2010), which had an I-94 on the footer! She was a F1 - OPT - H1, and the only visa she had in passport was an expired F-1 visa!!! She was scared that she mite be harassed at POE bcos of her religious background as well as an expired student visa! But am happy to say that it was a cakewalk for her. She dont have EAD/AP......did not apply for I-485!
FYI...she had an H1B visa appt. in Ottawa US Embasy, but had to cancel it, for someone from the Embassy called her to update that her H1B visa issuance cud take a few weeks time owing to her nationality :-( She decided to get it in Pak in Decemb! :-)
|
Its quite amazing to hear that the consulate is letting the people know about possiblilty of getting stuck for a couple of weeks..
usfazli was also told the same...I tried getting appt at ottawa or toronto..but no luck so far..
I hope they allow AVR when traveling through an airport as well..anybody heard or experience AVR at toronto airport recently
thanks
|
MiyaBhai,
Keep trying for visa appt in nvars website, atleast twice an hour!!! Ask a friend or relative to watch out for the same.
And I think the US visa officers in Canada are awesome!!! I still cant believe that they call applicants who stand the chance of getting their visa issuance delayed!!! Its completely Beyond the Call of Duty! Kudos to the US consular officers in Canadian Posts.
