Hey!
Can you post the initial tasks to do after landing.... looks like once HSMP appicants reaches in UK then they doesn't spend much time from which they learned lot. If you already landed can you list out what you did in order.

Thanks

If you havent got accomadation go for a cheap accomadation like flat share until you get a full time job, buy your stuff like clothing

get a oester card(if you are in london to travel by trains , this is issued by the london underground(www.tfl.gov.uk)

*** Learn some english manners first.this make a big differance in day to day life.your guide line should be behave like englishman when in uk, behave like an indian/pakistany or who ever back home ,

*do not use you NATIVE language what so ever infront of english speaking people(white or black or what ever)
No offence we all love our countires and languages culture, but there things you have to adopt for success here,
These people consider it VERY RUDE to use other languages while in a english speaking english community.I have seen many a time out people just being very rude (listed as tribes by some arrogent white people)

A * "give me one","you do that","get it done"
B * pinting finger when speak
C * very loud even speaking english

if you are doing this , please adopt NOT TO.

please can I have, could you please do that, could you, would you please, may I will be the best and decent way to use it.I know occations where white thugs attack (beat up) brown skinned people like us for the usage of that rude A* type english.

make sure always 100% use >>

Sorry for the annoying english lesson , but trust me 99% of you come here do this,(as inherited from our mother lands ) and also trust me , the response to get some thing work out will be must great if you use these decent english
They always think we are rude adn tribes other wise.Make sure we all prove we have a dignity(and not tribes atleast for now)

OK now the things to DO,

1) bank account (go to bank with passport and hsmp letter start bank account)also dont go to shitty banks or rippers like barclays hsbc or natwest
they are normally taking your money than give you some thing

2) Go to doc (GP) and register
3) register in all online sites.
4) change your CV to UK style (which is bit differant to the once you see else where)

5)face inerviews ( be confident, listen and answer
, always go to thw white board if there is fasiclity, demand)

Intial its wise to get to what ever job you get wioth out worrying about salary.Cos in uk , they dont care you have a PHD and 20 years of experience,What matters to them is UK degree and Uk work expereince. So make soure you get some decent exposure to uk work before you look at your right rate
ex 3 year expereince in .net developer here, is not the same as 3 years exp indian .net developer
well unfortunately thats how they think, make sure you dnt give them any chance regarding this

good luck to you all newbies, and raise you you questions here, NastyKid wil be happy to answer

Hello everybody

Which are the good banks that I can open an account with as soon as I arrive in the UK? I know you spoke about the rip-offs like Barclays, HSBC, etc
Also being very realistic, could you break down the costs in the following manner per month (staying in Central London);
RENT
TRANSPORT
GROCERIES

Tx

yes you are right

NO barclays,HSBC , natwest charges you a lot

LLoyds good if you have good salaries with good interest rates, mortgage wise , halifax is handy :)

rent in london for a 1 bed flat varies from 500£ upwards.(you can get dodgy ones cheaper though :)

tranport well zone 1 most expensive in London, bus pass is cheaper(weekly if you travel walking distance or so(with in 30 minutes)

zone 1-3 around 105£ per month,
groceries, find a local asian shop (there are plenty all over country)
dont ahop on tesco ect

asda is cheaper than all in my experience.

out od london /other cities slighly cheaper than London. But less oppertunities for jobs for HSMP

Hello Everyone,

I thought I would add my 2cents of advice aswell for those who need to know before coming to the uk,

Phone Number will play a vital role in you job hunts. Unlike in India you dont get easily phone/sim, well not exactly but you will have two options ..
1. Pay As You Go (Prepaid)
2. Monthly Contract (min of 12 months) Most economical and you get a phone hand set free.

BUT.. Contracts are given only to those who can setup a direct debit from your bank. Since you will not have bank account immediately. You might want to go for "Pay As you Go " . Phone bills might rip you off if you are a good chatter ;-) . No offence to be taken please. I would say get your phone along with you and you can get a free sim. Then you can check which plan suits you untill you take your back account ..

Hope this helps.. All the best for you all.

Also .. for those who are sendaholics .. beware of Credit Cards.. They are very handy and can be deamons if misutilised..

Cheers

Hi all

I have another question. According to the current HSMP Rules, when one enters the UK, they get a 2 year VISA right? (Correct me if I am wrong).
Within those 2 years how long is one allowed to be out of the UK, even when he/she is on business trips/ Contracts in other countries but still getting paid in the UK and being taxed in the UK?

Please help me somebody

Hey Guys,
First of all who ever started this thread, I would like to say "Thank you and Good job!".
I got my EC yesterday (19th Aug 2008) and I am planning to travel to the UK after 10th Sept 2008.

I have 5 yrs of experience in Embedded systems and 2 yrs of domain specific experience in Automotive infotainment systems. Could any of you guys kindly answer the following questions considering my profile?

1. Which would be the Ideal place to stay while doing a job search, opportunities wise?
2. Same question as above considering all factors (opportunities, expenditure, more job seekers, etc considerations)?
3. How much would be the per month expenditure (approx) for both the above places?
4. Which are the best job sites, to register for?
5. Your comment on Matrix mobile connection, which we can get here before traveling to the UK. No roaming on incoming while in the UK, free sim post paid connection etc is making it handy. Even reliance has such international sim cards now a days.
6. I heard Coventry, UK has best economical cost of living, coming to around 250GBP per month. Including all expenses if living with friends on a share basis. What are your comments on this?

I got my post dated visa starts from Oct 01st. I am planning to visit uk by the end of october and stay there for two weeks. After that i will return back to India and then travel again to uk during the end of January once for all.

I don't want to stay in uk during november & december as those months are considered to be a very dry period for recruitment.

My basic plan is that, First go on a two weeks visit understand the situation, job market, get use of the culture, study the cost of living etc....then come back to India put my papers and travel to uk permenantely. I don't want to risk my job without knowing much about uk. Even though we read a lot in web but i still feel that we should be physically present there to understand the situation. However, this is my opinion.
(reply) (report this)
Posted by molsang (71) 22 Aug 2008
I do not think you need to stay there physically to understand ground situation. It will cost you 1000 GBP minimum for to and fro travel and living cost for 2 weeks. You will lose the money for nothing, if you have some friends in UK then contact them, they are very good source of actual ground informations.
If you do not have friends in UK even you can make some friends throung immigration forums and can find ground reality.
I am also in same boat, I will apply for EC on OCT 1st week and will get it probably on OCT end, my suggestions are as follows..
01. Build a comprehensive compact resume.
02. Post your resume to all jobsites (5-8 good sites are there)
03. Post your friend's UK address as your address (Since without a UK address nobody will bother to look at your resume)
04. get a UK number being at India (very much possible and affordable)
05. Start applying jobs aggresively.
06. Attend 1st/2nd round interviews via your UK number.
07. tell interviewer you are currently in India and will be coming to UK in 5-10 working days, schedule some f2f interviews.
08. Plan for an immediate travel in advance (you may need to pay little more for air tickets)
09. Attend f2f interviews.

I guess this is a good plan for all of us who has no idea about UK market/culture etc.

I too agree with you....I don't want to risk my current job and at the same time I want to have a entry stamping within one month so that there won't be any problem during PR. In that case what do you suggest. I have my friend in uk apart from the flight fare I don't need to spend much for stay (just 100 GBP..sharing accomodation for two weeks)..I agree its a little costly affair but still my both the purpose will get solved.
(reply) (report this)
Posted by molsang (71) 22 Aug 2008
Can you please elaborate how it will help your case for PR, if you get an entry stamp in your passport within a month of visa start date?
(reply) (report this)
Posted by induk (23) 23 Aug 2008
your first entry in to UK on HSMP / Tier 1 leave to enter will start your ILR count.

If you enter UK after 28 days then ILR date gets pushed further and You will have to apply for more number of extensions (expense) before you can apply for ILR. e.g.- 2 extension instead of the usual 1.

For PR who should have stay period of 4 yrs & 11 months. If you visit uk within 28 days of the visa valid date then you will be eligible for the PR without applying for 2nd extension (3 yrs HSMP visa + 2 ILR)
(reply) (report this)
Posted by molsang (71) 23 Aug 2008
Got your point.

If second FLR's(HSMP extension) approximate cost for u and ur dependents is more than the cost of your proposed plan to visit UK for 2 weeks within 28 days of your visa start date then you may have a point.
Just keep one thing in mind that UK immigration rules are not static, it had been changed very frequently in past and that trend is still there. So our goal keeps on changing, we do not know whether current set of rules will be relevant after 5 years. So does it make sense to plan something today when certain things are not in our control and whatever rule is relevant today may not be same after six months down the line.
So think of it, i guess you should go to UK with good home work and for longer duration only.
Unless there are scheduled f2f interviews it does not make any sense to go Uk just for 2 weeks.

hi..you are right. But 2 weeks in uk wud not solve any purpose because first you have to apply NI number and uk bank account - it will take 1-2 months and looking for a job takes usually 1-2 months (average),
If you are well settled in your job, then i will advise its not right to come in UK, as job situation in UK is very gloomy, even economy is facing very tough time, if you got a chance to look at Chancellor`s statment.

Hi

It depends what type of phone you need, a UK contract phone which is also a best deal and economical can only be taken once you are here and there are some cheap companies like 3 mobile which will do the trick for you (3 mobile does contracts for £15 a month and gives you good numebr of minutes to use)
you can also do pay-as-you-go phone, thats only sim card but calls cost must higher. (pay-as-you go sim costs around £10 and higher)
not sure what you cna get from india, but i guess there are many options now a days in india to get this as some of my friends have had bought with then when they came form india

you will get many options when you are here

cheers

i believe he is asking for a UK local number, which redirect to india - Say if i dial local number in UK 0208....then bell will ring in india and you can talk in india at local call charges. that is www.tajphone.co.uk

If you are looking for prepaid sim, get it free here -
https://www.v-store.co.uk/index.cfm?go=checkout.freesims

If you want free mintues to call to india - then use rebtel https://www.rebtel.com/en/Utility-Pages/Join-flow/Join/ - use voucher code - talktomom11 - you will get 70 minutes free call to india.
