Topic: Do you keep green card with you at all times?
Posted by Lalito (223) 02 Jul 2008
Do you keep green card with you at all times or keep it in a safe place and just keep a copy of it with you?

darn, I hope I have the same problem as yours....but I don't have a GC yet...but if got it, if it isn't against the law to photocopy it, I will enlarge it and put in a frame and display it at the living room....lol!

I hope somebody will answer you seriously.

wow...what an innocently crafted question - I can just picture a nervous person half staring at the green card and trying to type a post in trackitt - its hard not to take a shot at your question - take one look at it....memorize all the numbers, take picture of it and put it away in a bank safe.

Legally speaking, you must carry your passport and GC at all times. Non-immigrants carry passport and I94.

Just carry it to comply with the law. Its like carrying a DL anyway. Just keep a photocopy in your file just in case you lost it. You can get a replacement anyway if in case.

Well, does this happen in reality?
Lets have a useless poll:
-how many of us carry their passorts and I-94 in their pockets? (majority of us)
I never did for the past 9 years since I was in the US.

- For lucky people who get green cards, how many carry the card in their pockets?

- How many of us (either cases) were asked to show their I-94 or green card? (exclude ocassion you were applying for benefits, SSN or travelling outside the country)

good point ... how do you carry them "on person" while you are in the pool?
some laws are probably there just so criminals can't get away by saying "i dont have to .. there is no such law"

FYI.
I do not know which state you live, but the majority of the states have laws that prevent a lstate law officer from asking you about your immigration status, the most they can do (in very few states) they can call ICE fedral officier to the site (wither jail or anywhere you are0 to question you about your immigration status. This does not happen unless one is a serious criminal

Laws have common sense.

Maybe we can ask a tattoo artist to duplicate it for us....I would put it on my butt....lol...just kidding.

Not where I live. They can ask for immigration status and they can throw you in jail for not able to prove your status. Where I live, cops can do this during any routine traffic stop.

really!! how do i find out abt my state?

but its not like they cannt identify who i am ...i have DL with a photo..

What's your PD for the gc tattoo? The tattoo shop for gc is also retrogressed for a few years. Better get in line now.

darn, if USCIS will handle this process, I'd better go home...or as a business minded person, I will contract it out and put it in every local USCIS and you will get an Infopass appointment for it...just like FP you know...lol!

Almost all countries have these kind of laws for non-citizens ... carrying passport and paperwork demonstrating legal presence in their country. Just because immigration is federal matter doesn't mean local authorities are powerless.

Or if you live in a border state or driving close to one, it may be a good idea to keep the GC (or atleast a copy of it). I have heard cases where people accidentally crossed to Canada (near Niagra Falls) and had hell of a time getting back in as they had no immigration documents. Same applies for Texas (El Paso), Cali (San Diego) etc.

enduring, I live in California, where do you live? I know that Arizona may be a problem?
either way if you live anywhere there, I do not think they will NOT allow you to bring it if you you do not have it on hand?

sunnyguy74,
In San Diego if you are near the crossing boarder it may happen but the ICE officers who asks you for this. California Law specifically prevent local law officers from asking about immigration status. Only thing they can do is to bring an ICE officer with them to ask you, which not practical unless it is in a planned raid..

I was in San Diego last year and had passed through ICE checkpoint. I was worried because I didn't bring any immigration docs. Luckily, our car was let pass without inspection or interview. I don't know how they profile who to be stopped and who to let go.

My guess is that they were looking for suspicious vehicles like out of state plate number, closed van, etc.

Original post from amNoLawyer:

--------------------------

Too risky. In the US, the odds of being mugged is far greater than being randomly questionned by an immigration officer.

My passport and papers are kept in a safe place. Wanna arrest me? Go ahead - make my day.

I carry a copy, and not the real thing, together with my DL. The difference between carrying the DL and the GC is that if I loose my DL it will cost me ~$20 and take about two weeks to get a new one. That is reasonable. But if I loose the GC, it will cost ~$370 and take about 6 months to get a new one. I think I'll pass on that one.

I live in a state without foreign borders though, and my state requires proof of immigration status to get a DL (Temp DL for temp status). And of course I bring the GC if I go abroad.

BTW. The law requires that you carry proof of immigration status. It doesn't say specifically that you need to carry the GC. And if you do carry the GC, there is no need to carry the Passport. You can even cross the border with GC alone, even if it is preferrable to bring the Passport as well when traveling abroad, especially since other countries will require it.

Can someone please post an actual case were someone was arrested in the US and asked to provide a GC - on the spot?

When someone is arrested it is almost exclusively while drive a motor vehicle. Then, you have to provide: driver license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance maybe. That's it. Oh perhaps a blood sample too.

Having to prove eligibility for work was required in such well publicized event as http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/13/us/13immig.html but the majority were taken into custody anyway so it would not have mattered if you carried a GC or not...

Discounts depends on where you want it. For sensitive parts, no discount. Go to Miami Ink, they'll do it there with TV broadcast and you'll be an overnight sensation among the immigrant community. Put it in u-tube as well...lol!

amnolawyer is correct.

The Welcome Notice does say that the GC must be carried by you always.
