Topic: Question to people that know about I-551 temporary stamps
Posted by Limboo (46) 05 Jul 2008
Do I need to have a valid passport from my country in order to receive a temporary stamp? If not, what would I need? Do they actually stamp my I-94? Any additional information is appreciated. Thanks.

Stamps are always placed in valid passports.

I551 is a permanent residency visa. Visa is always placed in the passport.

In order to have a valid passport you need to show your embassy that your status is legal in United States. If you have your welcome notice then you can show that to the embassy and get a brand new passport.

The IO will place the I551 (I believe it is a label and not an ink stamp) permanent residency visa into your passport.

Good luck friend

The problem I have is that my country requires that I renew my passport there and the embassy can only give me a travel document at this time valid for a month. Will they turn me away if I go to an infopass or will they accept the travel document? I am assuming the document has to be valid for the duration of the I-551? Thanks a lot.

My guess is that you are out of luck. My understanding is that you need a passport with at least 6 months validity to get the stamp. Are you too late to wait for the actual green card to arrive?

By the way, is your green card approved? Your profile is incomplete. Why don't you first update your profile?

I will update it for sure when it is approved. You're right, my only option it seems like is to wait. I've seen people waiting a month and some 6 months. What's more accurate?

Consulates give passports whether you are in status or not. The purpose of a passport if for travel. I know mine does. and the stamp has a special ink that cannot be replicated. The stamp will not be placed on anything but a passport.

1) That depends on the country. Most countries do not give the illegal residence in another country a passport. I know that embassy of Iran in Washington requires the original GC or Visas such as F1 or H1B in order to renew or issue a new passport. So if a Iranian citizen over stays his/her visa that person can not get a passport. However if the person decides to leave the country the embassy will issue "travel documents" so the person can pass through the international borders and get back to Iran. Many other countries have similar laws. Some of them like Kuwait which is "Limboo's" country of citizenship require their citizen to travel back to the country in order to get their new passport.

...and also the purpose of the passport is not only for travel as you said. It is the most important form of the identification document. Most consulates and embassies don't issue it unless their citizen has the legal status in that particular country.

2) I have read in this forum that one of Trackitters got a I-551 label on on passport rather than a ink stamp. I got my plastic card and I never got an I-551 stamp so I have not seen one. No matter how the I-551 looks like it goes to the passport.

.....and for Limbo, I believe that the only option for you is to wait for the physical card.

The embassy of India in Washington DC does not issue a new passport if the Indian Citizen in US is not in status.

I believe that most countries are like that.

I got an I-551 last week. It's a red ink stamp that goes into a blank page in the passport. Takes all of 60 seconds to get issued.

I confirm what Goblina said.
Italian consulates in the US issue a new passport (or renew an old one) to italian citiizens if and only if you have a valid status in the US. If you do not have GC, applied for it (i-485) or a dual intent VISA (like H1) they keep questioning why you ask for a Italian document abroad and not in Italy (meaning with F1 or J1 it is a lot harder to get the Italian consulate to work for you).

It doesn't look like it is necessary to have a GC in order to renew Indian passport. Even being in process of AOS
is OK as long as you can document it. EAD is also acceptable. In case the passport has expired, one needs
to fill out an affidavit and may also have to appear for an interview at the consulate or embassy.

I suppose different countries have different requirements.

rprr:

Who said in this forum that you need to have a GC in order to renew Indian passport???

I said that you need to have a legal status. Legal status means F, H, L visas, EAD, AOS, GC, etc.

IHATEIV: My bad.

I was confused reading Ginetto's earlier post regarding Italian passport renewal.

I will update it for sure when it is approved. You're right, my only option it seems like is to wait. I've seen people waiting a month and some 6 months. What's more accurate?

OK. Am I the only one missing something here. You cannot get a I-551 stamp unless your application is approved. Once it is approved you may get your card in hand in as little as a week. So why are you talking about I-551 stamp now???????

I have a complicated situation in which I only have a conditional approval. I expect -and hope- that the "conditions" will be resolved very soon and I would like to travel immediately after. I don't want to complicate this for others as I am in a some what unique situation as of now and no one should worry about a "conditional approval".

Metr5550, does that mean you think that at the infopass they will stamp my travel document eventhough my embassy issues a 1 month travel document?

I can almost guarantee that you need an empty page in a passport with atleast 6 months validity to get any stamp. You can take an infopass and confirm.

I would be highly surprised if they will stamp your travel document. Did you receive an approval notice granting you
conditional approval of the I-485. If so maybe you could call the Service Center to see if the card could be expedited.
From this forum it looks like most people seem to receive their GCs in about 1-2 weeks from approval/card production.

Good luck.

yes, I know for sure that the lenghth of the validity of your travel document is not an issue. They will still stamp your document if you a refugee with a limited validity travell document. I am not sure though if the situation is different if it is a conditional gc, but i guess it would be the same
