Topic: AUSTRALIAN PR or CANADIAN PR--Which is BETTER?
Posted by sajdelhi (62) 12 Sep 2008
I already posted a thread on Australian PR but I would like to know the advantage and disadvantage of Australian PR and canadian PR as it appears both of them take same timeframe to get it.

please give your thoughts guys

this is my answer

both has merits and demerits.

Lets say merits of Canadian PR
1) Dollar higher than Australia
2) Free health care system
3) closer to US and you have an option of working in US through TN visa under NAFTA agreement
4) Its beautiful country
5) real estate market is very cheap.

Demerits of canadian PR
1) very far away from India
2) Tax rate is very high
3) Weather is extremely harsh and cold.

Merits of Australian PR
1) very close to india
2) Its beautiful country like canada
3) IT Jobs are more in Australia than in canada
4) health care system is good
5) Weather is similar to US

Demerits of Australian PR
1) Dollar is lower than canada
2) can be a racial country once upon a time but not anymore
3) tax are high

If I have to choose one, I would choose Canadian PR over australian PR simply because US is closer and you can work in US anytime

once you become an Australian citizen you can easily come to US with some visa type like TN visa, and it can be renewed easily every year. one of my ex-colleague an australian citizen and now he is working here. He told that he doesnt have restiction like H1, and he is free to work with any employer and easy to renew his visa every year. But i dont know, what visa he is here....

One major difference...

Australia: Racial
Canada: Negligible (Compared to Aus).

actually australians comes under separate visa category to US.
They dont come through H1B. They have a visa called 'R' visa. Its only available for australian citizens
also, if you are australian citizen, you can get your GC under 'R' visa. unlike canada, where you have to again go through H1B. Thats the major difference

Since aust is in south hem we can have summer all year if we work six months there and six months here in US on the TN visa. So if some could pull it off then it would be summer of his/her life

Hi,

Here are my research points :

Canadian PR:

takes around 1 year
You can land as a PR
IT jobs are less when compared to US
US is closer but what use when you cannot work?
You can get TN visa only if you are a citizen of canada AND NOT a PR
Dollar rate is more.. but sal levels are low
Medical is good than AUS
Weather is BAD when compared to AUS
Farther to India
No special privelages for working in US
When on TN visa you cannot file for GC

AUS PR

Takes one 15 months
Dollar rate is low but SAL is high
IT jobs are more
Closer to India
AUS citizens can come to US on E3 visa ( 10k+) every year
they can be easily renewed like TN but you cannot apply GC with that

Suggestion :

Apply only when you are in 4th year H1 and have not started labor.

Reason : It takes one year to get CAN PR or AUS PR.. then you will have roughly 10 months to land and save ur PR in that country.. by which time if luck runds oout of H1, you can switch to that other country

so TN Visa like Canadian's have ...earlier i heard it was 1 year but now they changed it to 3 years...and ofcourse it's not like h1b i believe we can change the employers at will...but the problem i guess is getting the citizenship to qualify for it. Can PR's apply for this TN Visa??? any one

looks like you are more careful when choosing a country based on death rate
good analysis. it definitely helps in chosing the PR

Australia / Canada / UK/ Its all the same, anyway, you got to start afresh in those countries to build a life.

Agreed on the common perception of racism being more rampant in Australia than Canada / US
I think intrinsically we humans will always have differences. Race, caste, color, whatever!!
Its about where you want to live and how you want to move on getting over it.
But There is not much difference in the standard of living which I think should be the primary matter of concern.

australian winters are not as harsh as in the US , but yes they are quite cold , say for example in Melbourne the temperature drops a couple of degrees beow freezing , with wind and rain

Australian summers are very hot and brutal , quite like Indian summers , but there is another precaution that you need to take , always have sun block as teh skin cancer rate is very very high in australia
