Topic: What is a LUD???
Since I see some people wondering or being confuses about this, and I was somewhat confused myself, I thought I should try to clarify it.
Let's start from the beginning. When you file a case with USCIS you get a receipt notice that has your case number. It starts with LIN if your case is in Nebraska, SRC if it is in Texas and another three letter code if it is at another service center. Using this case number you can check the status of your case at the http://www.uscis.gov web site. You can do this in two ways:
1. By entering the case number on the web site.
2. By setting up a Customer portfolio that can monitor one or more cases.
Both methods will show you the status of your case, and if you set up a portfolio an email will (usually) be sent to you when your case status changes. This will be a "hard" LUD (Last Up Dated) since you know why the case was updated since you will see the change in status.
However, the status will only change if the USCIS sends you something (receipt notice,RFE, approval notice, notice of intent to deny, card, or other documents), and when they receive something you sent to them (application, request for premium processing, answer to RFE, or other documents). Technically I think the status changes if they make a decision without sending something too, but I don't think they ever do that.
From the time the USCIS gets your application to the time it gets approved, a lot of things happens to it: your fingerprints get added, your name check results come back, it gets prepared for approval, and other things that only USCIS knows about .... This does not change the status and you will not get an email about it either. I'll call this a "soft" LUD. The only way you can see this is if you have a portfolio and you log in to your account. You will see that the Last Updated date for one or more of your cases has changed without the status being changed. To be able to catch every time you get a "soft" LUD you have to log in to your portfolio at least once every business day. Even though many, including myself tries to figure out what these "soft" LUDs mean, there is really no one outside the USCIS that will know why the case was touched, but there are many guesses.
Hope this clears up some of the mystery for someone.

Thanks for being considerate. I was myself confused about all of this when I started this journey.
|
Can I set up my own customer portfolio account to just look at my LUDs even my employer attorney is already monitoring my case? They advise us not to contact the USCIS personally and to go through them all the time.
|
Yes you can. It does not effect your case more than checking the case status using the case number on the web site (which should be not at all). The USCIS would not mind. If it violates your company policy or not I do not know, but they wouldn't know unless you tell them or use your work email.
Note: I am not a lawyer or legal/immigration professional of any kind. My answer is based on my own experiences and things I have read here on the Internet.

THomas,
I read from your case that you were requested to submit a second medical examination.
I have been requested a second medical examination because of the TB test and incomplete vaccines.
How long did it take you to get your I-485 approved after you submit your second medical examination?
|
I was not requested to submit a new medical examination, only the results of the TB Skin test. The doctor gave me a sealed envelope with a new I-693 in it with all the old data plus the result of the TB skin test and he attached the paperwork that showed the result of the skin test and how it was done as well.
From when I sent the reply to the RFE (using FedEx Overnight) to I got the approval it took one week. (It took USCIS 2 days from FedEx delivered until the status changed to reply received.) The average among approved cases seems to be about 8-9 days, with a variance from 3 days up to three weeks. Some people are still waiting though possibly waiting for visa numbers, or maybe name check.

Hey
Explain this - I sent an application Notice date 10/11/2007. The last LUD I got was 10/13/2007. I-140 was approved in May. But LUD for I-485 remains the same from October 13.
|
so a soft LUD = a update change on USCIS profile (meaning something happened but we know not what)
A hard LUD = an actual email notification from USCIS explaining what happened to one's case??
Are soft LUDS worth tracking/worrying about?
|
Well, this is the only way you can be in touch with your applications, by noticing soft/hard LUDs... I am myself paranoid about it :)
|
LOL.... that's my point.... I hav'nt got time for paranoia!!! Soft LUDS not too worry, hard LUDS, 'something is happening'!!! :o)
|
Thanks a lot for the information. Now how do I set up a customer portfolio my case? Thanks
|
Sometimes I wonder if it would have been better if I had not known what LUD is. It just gave me paranoia!

Just go to the USCIS website, Case Processing and then Register....follow the instruction and create your portfolio by adding your case numbers. Every time you log in, you will see your cases and if there are up-dates on them. You will see the LUD (Last Update Date) also.

hi vnavarrete74 (23) i also interviewed in okc on nov 1st ,i want to know if you got any thing so far from them, are you in tulsa?we can keep in touch if you drop an email.
|
Anyone knows what happens when you get many LUDs. I noticed that recently my case was transferred and I got many LUDs after it was recieved.
Is it good or bad or normal?
|
I created my portfolio with all case numbers and requested to shoot an email if there any change in status, but i dint see any update to my I140 and I485 cases. is this means no updates since i submit applications. I added payrollee and employment authorization cases when i created portfolio, and when status changed i got an email saying your case approved. what about I140 and I485 cases?
|
On my I-485 I had no LUDs at all between 8/17/07 (just after my fingerprint appointment) until 4/18/08 (they sent an RFE). And my case was approved in exactly the average processing time, so some people must wait a lot longer between LUDs. So don't be surprised if you don't see much movement for long periods of time. I did have a LUD on my I-140 on 1/6/08 but that seems to have been some random update/computer sweep (my I-140 was approved on 12/12/06 so it wasn't like it was an active case or anything).

I submitted OPT (I-765) application on 31st March. My notice of action date was 1st April. I have job starting on June 2nd. I submitted expedite request on 2nd May and send the requested documents on 6th May. I had soft LUD on 4th, 9th, 12th, 13th May. Does this mean anything ? Btw i have been calling USCIS California Service Center on all these days 9th, 12th, 13th May to know if they accepted my request, but no reply from them (asking me to wait). But I had Soft LUD early morning before calling USCIS on all these days. Does this mean they accepted my expedite request ?
Any idea ?
Thanks.

Thank you for your explanation about what is a LUD.
But, how do I setup an account of my own "a portfolio" to see the status change? Where should I go? Would I be able to log on onto that account to see daily changes?
Thank you!

When you log in you will be able to see when someone tuched your file last time. For hard LUDs you will see what they did, but for the soft LUDs you will only know they did something, not what they did.

Followed your advice. Created an account, and logged in.
I saw a table with a link with my I-485 number. I clicked in, and I saw the following:
" Application Type: I485, APPLICATION TO REGISTER PERMANENT RESIDENCE OR TO ADJUST STATUS
Current Status: Case received and pending."
This is the same as what I saw since last October. I have seen this for almost one year!
Where is the update? Did I look at the right place?
Which button or place should I click in for "soft" or "hard" LUDs?
Thank you very much!
|
I saw a table with a link with my I-485 number.
THAT table has a column entitled 'Last Updated' - that is where people with obsessive LUD tracking syndrome go every 15 minutes to check if the date has changed. Beware of getting addicted though, almost everybody else on this forum already is.

|
Yes, saw a date which the case was "last updated." However, nothing popping out after clicking that item.
Did I miss anything? Or should I look at somewhere else?
Thank you~
|
No, that date *is* the LUD. When the date changes but there is no change in your status, that is what people refer to as a "soft" LUD. When the date changes and the status changes to something else (for example, from "Case Received and Pending" to "Request for Evidence Sent", that is a "hard" LUD. This terminology is usually reserved for COLTS sufferers.
|
okay--now understood what is soft what is hard.
How should I worry about soft vs hard? Any tricks? How do I manage the information obtained from soft v. hard?
Would this make it faster to get greened?

good question! I have seen people with all sorts of soft LUD history etc.

How should you worry? You shouldn't worry at all. When you send an application to USCIS, they will stick a bar code on it and scan it every time they do something. Sometimes they transfer files to another shelf, or assign it to an adjudicator, or whatever. Every time this happens, the LUD will change. On this forum, people tend to have a seizure every time they see an LUD, but in all honesty there is nothing much to do until you see a "hard" LUD. The so-called "soft" LUD can sometimes help you know, for example, that somebody touched your case after months of being on the shelf, which may mean that they might look at it shortly, or perhaps moved it to the "to be assigned an officer" shelf. But all you can do at that point is speculate, and over-speculating is what causes "Luditis".
So don't worry too much about "soft" LUDs. I have seen two such LUDs on my case over the past two days but I haven't made any thoughts out of it except post it to my profile because others tend to like to track these thing in order to give them more reasons to have a cardiac arrest when comparing it to their own cases. Sometimes I don't even check my profile for a long period of time....
|
So, a software LUD refers to the application is being "touched"-----albeit still unknown why, and how it is processed. Correct?
|
Correct - except it's referred to as a "soft LUD" not "software" :)
|
Why does one have to log in every business day to catch a Soft LUD? My last change date was back in March and the status remained the same...isnt that a Soft LUD?

Nobody *has* to log in every day to catch one, but it's a sorry addiction for a lot of people....
|
The initial post talked about one having to log in every day to catch a soft LUD....thats why I was asking.

You can log in as often or as seldom as you want. The point though is that you will not be notified of a soft LUD (you only get emails about hard LUDs). If you for instance log in every 2 weeks, you will see the latest soft LUD but you will not know if that was the only LUD during that period or if there were more. Eg. You log in today for the first time sine 11/5/2008 and you have a LUD on 11/14/2008, you may also have had LUDs on 11/12/2008 and 11/13/2008 but there is no way to know. One LUD may mean the case was just moved from one place to another, while LUDs on three consequtive days most likely means someone is working on the case.
|
That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the explanation.
