Topic: It can happen quickly! My timeline...
Posted by thirstydeer (3) 30 Jun 2008
Just wanted to show everyone that it can happen quickly, and not to let go of hope and faith. I would've posted more from earlier when I just started the process, but truthfully, I simply didn't know this website existed till recently.

March 3 - Application sent to CIC-M
March 6 - Application received by CIC-M
April 1 - Application process started
April 2 - Approved for sponsorship
April 14 - Application process started at CHC London
May 22 - PPR and photos request by CHC London
June 30 - PR visa received from CHC London

We're done! I can't believe it! The only last thing is that we need to exit the country and come back in to make it effective. From July 14-17, we're going to Stewart, BC to go fishing, camping, and so on. We'll cross the border there to Alaska and come back.

Wait, you were living in Canada before the visa was approved, but applied for Family Class outside of Canada?

I ask because I am planning on moving back to Canada the first week of August. I should have my visa by then, but there is a chance that I may not. I would like to go up even if I dont have it, and then just cross the border to land officialy when I do receive it. I'm just not sure if that would fly at the border.

That's correct. When we applied, my wife was in England, but moved here prior to attaining PR approval. CIC doesn't tell you that you don't HAVE to be separate from your spouse (he/she still living in their home nation) in order to apply via the outside method. The spouse can be with you in Canada. There are definite advantages to doing it this way.

Oh wow, I didn't even think of that. Well, thanks for the info! I may have to go up if they don't approve my visa soon. This waiting is killing me!

That's what we did - we moved my wife over prior to approval. Getting across the border is another issue, though. Research that before you make the decision.

One of the reasons it happened fast for you is that it was Canada-England. If it were also one of the other British Commonwealth countries or a friendly European country it might also be this quick. If the applicant is from any other country considered "third world" or a security risk, the slow line starts here behind me and others who are waiting .....TOO LONG. Have a nice vacation, I thought my husband would be here to enjoy the summer. h#ll, I thought he'd be here LAST summer.

Congratulations!! It's very confusing why my wife waits for 14 months (still ongoing). We thought we paid so much attention to the application and submitted a lot of documents.

Why is there so much discrepancy between timelines??

I am currently staying in Canada on a visitor's visa while awaiting my permanent residency. Make sure that you tell the border agents that you are visiting--not moving! They may prohibit you from entering! I was told that I must have my PR card in order to "move"...Just ask for a 3 month visitor's pass (You can request a renewal application from the CIC website)

"Research that before you make the decision."

Where would one check to see if this is a possibility? Does this only apply to citizens of countries who don't require visas to enter Canada? My wife is Indian, and we were under the impression that the Canadian embassy in India would not issue her a temporary resident visa, on account she would be considered high risk to overstay. If we told the embassy that her permanent residency appication was ongoing, would that be considered sufficient reason-to-return for them to consider issuing a temporary resident visa? I'd really like her to come with me when I return to Canada in September, but it doesn't look likely that her PR application will be processed by then.

Any advice or other info would be appreciate.

Cheers.

I am a U.S. citizen, but that did not further my case when I came to Canada to visit. The border agent told me that if my case was not already in progress, he would have made me return to the states. My case had not finished processing (I had only received an approval letter from CIC), but I had a referral number from my application receipt. In other words, the fact that I did have a case number was most beneficial for gaining my visitor's visa. I hope this helps somewhat. I know in your case you have a bigger chance to take..seeing as your wife is in India. Even though, I hope that everything works out quickly for you...I know that it is difficult going through the waiting game.....

P.S. Is this a possibility-submitting a visitor's visa application from the CIC website for temporary stay? CIC has been extremely quick in their replies...I would try it

Thanks for the reply. After making some other consultations, it is now less likely that we will apply for a TRV for my wife, as even if she is granted one (and that is a huge, improbable IF!), the uncertainty of the timeline of her PRV application doesn't really make such a move practical. It would also be more expensive (more int'l flights, etc.)

Our frustration just comes from the uncertain timeline for her application. If there was a specific date we could look forward to, it would make the waiting a little less stressful! I know this is normal, but it doesn't make it any easier to accept.

Thanks again.
