Topic: 2 Questions about sponsoring spouse
Posted by Tibbychick (9) 07 Mar 2008
Hi all,

My husband will be applying to sponsor me soon. We have 2 concerns.

1. How closely do they assess him (my sponsor)? Will they do a background check or police check on him like I had to do?

and

2. What is the minimum income requirement for him to sponsor me?

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Hiya, Yes they do a criminal check, just a basic one. Are you legally married and living with him in Canada? If so then he automatically qualifies as your sponsor. I was SO relieved when a call centre agent told me that because my hubby is on insurance and I make more than he does. Fortunately it's not an issue. If that is not the case you can get the information from a certain form which I can't remember the reference for.... I have it written down somewhere so I will look for it tonight for you. I really hope that you are exempt from the requirement like me though because it's just wonderful not to have that extra worry! Good luck.

I had been living with him up until last October, but now live back in NY. I'm pretty sure he makes enough money though, but if you have that on paperwork please let me know. Thanks for all your help!

K I found it.. man the CIC site is difficult to navigate sometimes *-|

Turns out I have purged my paperwork somewhat and didn't have the reference written anymore.

BUT

I went to Spouse out of Canada and linked to general information on sponsorship. From there if you click on Tables and Charts you get to this link http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/3900E10.asp which sets it out. In the header it refers to grandparents and all that, but I did link there directly from the Spouse section. I wonder if maybe you are exempt too.. it would be worth phoning the embassy to ask if there are any concerns but hopefully you are right and he makes enough :)

Hmm, well that is for Quebec, we're going through Ontario. BUT hopefully Ontario's standards are about the same, in which case he makes more than enough. That's a good idea though, i'll see if I can give them a call this week. Thanks again for your help!

No problem, I appreciate you finding that for me! I'm sure Ontario is about the same anyway. We should be ok. Thanks!

Well if there's no income requirement, how come they ask for all his income information? I'd like that to be the case but it doesn't make sense to me. Thanks

They ask you because they want to ensure that the sponsor is not collecting social assistance. Also, if you had dependents who had dependents that your husband was sponsoring there would be a minimum income requirement and it's all the same form...

Just got the great news that he was approved as my sponsor! Now it's onto Buffalo, where hopefully they will be just as quick with my part of the application!
