Topic: What's so great about America?
Since there are so many people on this forum trying to come to US, I wanted to point out something we all have seen around us: people talking bad about US, their culture, their immigration system, their moral decay (as seen in hollywood movies). Why do so many people "bad-mouth" the US, but yet, millions want to move to the US every year and eventually get settled here?
Truth is, the US provides the best life in terms of wealth, freedom, innovation, entrepreneurship, integrity, and moral character which is hard to find in any other country. Just count how many immigrants have accumulated more wealth and lived safer and healthier lives in this country than if they had stayed back in their own country?
In America, you can pick virtually any profession to try to excel at it. Couples who wish to marry don't compare their birth status first. If they're not happy with each other, then they separate rather than live a life of mental torture.
When some third world country mistreats prisoners of war, it's soon forgotten, and even considered somewhat apt. But when America mistreats prisoners of war, there is a huge outcry. Why is that? Because America is held to such a high moral standard that every small unethical act is noticed and questioned.
America is a country where you "hear" about racism, but hardly ever get to "see" it.
America is a country where you can't tell the rich from the poor, because more than money, it's character and integrity that matters.
I wouldn't trade living in America for anything else. God has given me a chance to live in America, and I'll make use of it and raise my kids here.
Thanks for listening.
Amen

Hello, I beg to differ from you on this, every country has its own + and - points, so let us not compare oranges to apples.
You might not have seen all of US, rich and poor is well divided in US too, this is one reason why the crime rate is so high.
If you can take a peek at the downtown neighborhood you see mostly African Americans.
In any country you can pick up any profession and excel it, it is true that US does have an advantage as it has an innovation spirit.
Yes US has to be kept to a moral high, that is how US functions. And being the big dog, you need to have more responsibility in all aspects. every aspect of US is of interest to everybody on the world, because you see, US dollar is so important for international trade, if some thing happens to US in any of the above mentioned terms it will result in a disaster.
Ask a African American about racism, he/she can explain better.
bottom line is straight, even US has its share of problems. For me, I make my living by creating good surroundings, no matter what country it might be.
good day and I wish you get your GC pretty soon.

Original post does sound like Goebbels propaganda, doesn’t it? Somebody has to wake up here.
What's so great about America? Nothing is. It’s just another country, with its own pluses and minuses. Why do people "come" here, and stay, and (some) "bad-mouth" the States, but still keep on paying taxes and going out to see movies on Friday? Well, they come here to simply take back what has been taken away from them in the first place: US political and economic system, and style of life in general, exist at the cost of other nations, countries, and the whole continents. "Wealth" and "opportunities" are not equally accessible. Opportunities... bla-bla-bla. Capitalism is just like a zoo: only the fittest survive.
USA has some weird thing about it. It’s what Babylon was to Alexander the Great: you may conquer it but it holds you hostage to your "dream" and just doesn't let go.
|
i dont analyse much about greatness of USA.. i am just here for money , rest of what mentioned in the original posting is all fiction. If i get a place else where to get more money , i will go there,as simple as that.
|
Ubi bene ibi patria - where one is well off there is his country.
Said that, I have serious thoughts going back to my country after my experience here.
That might get me to the higher salary level where I will be OK.
US is great but it has things that are really bad (healthcare, crime rate, high taxes etc.)
So it is just another country.
What I really appreciate here is that people are nice to foreigners.
That is a big plus. Europe is not like that.
Where you have money, everyone will be good to you.
To the beggars people are usually not that nice. That is the fact of life.
I plan to make money, here or there, it doesn't matter.
America is great as long as you can make money.
If you can't, you are better of somewhere else.

Q: What's so great about America?
A: $
|
Donuts, pop corn, hot dogs, chilli cheese fries, sliders, hershey bars..... (in no particular order of course!!)
(and no, before anyone says it, I am *not* horizontally challenged!, just like my snacks)....
oh btw... $'s are OK too! ;o)

Everything is great about America. I'm glad to have been born in a coutry so close to the U.S. as Mexico. And while the saying "so close to glory, yet so far away" is a constant in the back of my mind, I can only count my blessings for not having to cross oceans or continents to get here. I have always held that if one is a beggar in the U.S., it is simply because one wants to be in that situation. In the U.S. if you have a will, you'll find a way. Even though I'm not a citizen or a resident of this country (although I have practically been raised here), I can say that I would die for this country. I love the U.S.. I love the freedom, politics, academic freedom, and a sense of purpose. I love that I can gather with my friends at a starbucks and discuss Baudrillard, Marx, Goldman, Nietzsche, Foucault, or Berlin with the same liberty as Locke, Hobbes, Rosseau, Burke, Ricardo, or Smith. I may be a Mexican by birth, but as Edmund Burke would hold, me being raised in American traditions and culture makes me an American.

What is great about America?
Everything is great.
Not only that, for those that are here just for the money, I say: Leave. This country is for people that want to build something and have something and leave something behind to their children and their children's children.
I am completely against the current immigration system, I am a firm believer that in order to immigrate one would have to serve the military first for a minimum of 5 years. Only by given one's own life can someone be a true citizen. A lot of people here just complain and want to call lawyers, and senators, and costumer service, because its their "right" to do so... but no one here has ever talked about giving back to the United States, and helping out in any way or another.
I for one, if my green card comes out soon enough (because of age reasons) will join at least the National Guard...
Also, I am completely against all those "immigrants" that start multiplying in here like rabbits, because their children then are "Americans", but they don't change their culture and don't assimilate American culture, instead they just start their own "mini-country" in here with all their children and family and relatives and friends... Citizenship should be granted on the premise that one served his country first, not that one was born in here, when their parents don't even believe in this land or can't even speak a minimal amount of English.
To all of you that don't agree with me, I say: Hope that they never allow naturalized immigrants to run for president, because if they do I will run, and if I win a lot will change ;)

I can see you transforming into an anti-immigrant even before you got your GC from your post.
God knows what will you be after you get GC and then citizenship!!
|
I am not anti-immigrant, I am pro-smart-immigration.
Instead of bringing people here that will work, milk the country and leave, it would be better to use the immigrants first in the army/navy/etc while they learn the language and prove themselves. There would not be Greencards anymore... people could still come here on special visas to work, but if they wanted to stay (meaning, become residents) they would have to quit their job and join the military like everybody else and work in their profession (or some other) while in the military.
But then again, I also said that someone should not be considered a citizen just because they were born in here.
Imagine someone here on work for 12months... they come, get their wives pregnant, they have the baby, they leave back to their country and their children are american... It does not make sense and it is a security issue later when this kid is 18 y/o and has an american passport but knows nothing of american culture or does not identify with american culture at all.
My way, it doesn't matter where you are born, you serve the military first. It doesn't matter if your family has been in the states for 2000 years, and you were born and raised here and never left, you need to serve the military first, THEN you become a citizen.
And for immigrants, its easy. If they come and serve, and learn all they have to learn and master the language plus a skill at the military (or if they already have one that they use while in the military, like engineering, computer programming, medicine, etc) then this individual could potentially apply to citizenship.
So as you can see, I am very much pro-immigration.
|
I wouldn't exactly call your immigration "smart." And why do people necessarily have to serve in the millitary. Certainly one cannot make people love a country. This is the reason why it is against the contitution to force a child to say the pledge of allegiance. You simply cannot put something in the hearts of people that they do not want. I think you are a very millitarily chauvanistic individual. And while I do agree on the fact that people should have to learn english (for efficiency reasons), and should not get citizenship based on birth (for political reasons, in Aristotelian terms), I must depart from you line of thinking on automatic military service for people coming here. A very irrational line of thinking to say the least.
|
my point is simple:
You want to be a citizen, whether you immigrated or were born here, you join the military.
You want to come and work, fine. But I think citizenship should be strongly tied up with military service, that's all.
|
I agree with you 100%. I lived in U.S and miss the freedom, the culture and the open spirit of people. No where in the world would you find such services and culture that America offers. I will go back to states anytime if a chance knocks on my door. God Bless America

Love your comments and love mexcian food that America offers. It is the best to live. and it is true if you have a legal workpermit you can make your dreams come true too!!

"it would be better to use the immigrants first in the army/navy/etc while they learn the language and prove themselves"
Yeah, the best militaries are always made up of mercenary forces of dubious loyalty, which is what you are proposing.
|
I am not saying to make the whole military based on immigrants,
But please, read and study the French Foreign Legion first like I did, then you can comment on my idea.
They are hardly "mercenary forces of dubious loyalty"... they fought hard on world war II (albeit like the rest of the french army part of them joined the nazis) and in north africa they had one of the most vicious battles, legionnaire against legionnaire, with the allied side winning of course.
They are one of the most respected fighting forces in the world, and they are solely responsible for protecting the jungles and installations of the European Space Agency in French Guiana.
The U.S. can only learn from such a military force, comprised of immigrants and foreigners, yes, but tested and proved on fire. The ones that receive citizenship (it is not automatic) become fine French citizens.
|
the money of course and a chance to fullfill your dreams. I am an Island girl and
I can honestly say that I am looking forward to getting my GC.
God Bless America
|
everyone has valid points here but the bottom line is millions of people want to move to America because the standard of living is high, levels of freedom are very high, and the oppurtunities are abundant. It doesn't mean it's the 'best' country in the world, that is a matter of opinion. But if you're a woman especially you will have more freedom and oppurtunity than many, many other places in the world.
i am proud of america, although there are many things we can do better.

candry...it seems you have lived in states for sometime. How many years did u live in the U.S?
|
GC Surfer: I appreciate your interests on trackit, I was allowed to stay on several visa classes and can't keep track of it.
|
Thats your problem, if you cant keep track of your visas, how will you keep track of GC process?
|
You know how I am going to keep track of my GC process. Here is how; First signing up on trackitt as candry and second by keeping track of GC Surfer. Because your progress will leave a trail behind for me to follow!!
|
How is it like to be GC surfer? I heard GC process is a lot daunting. How are you trying to float your boat?
|
....
You want to be a citizen, whether you immigrated or were born here, you join the military... .
Genius, SnakeEyes. let's scrap all this stupid immigration and have only one - MB (Military Based) immigration. We are gonna have the following categories:
MB1 - Kamikazes. No per country quota. Always current, after every successful mission - postmortem green card.
MB2 - Tankmen, Artillery, Snipers. Requirement: 5 years surviving in ghetto.
MB3 - Infantry. 30% of total forces + those who survived from MB2. requirement: 2 years living in ghetto. India and China have 7% cap.
MB4 - Special military (cooks, janitors)
MB5 - Sponsors. People who can start a new war involving 10+ people of MB2 category and wasting not less than $1mil.
|
Hi there, you forgot about the 6 category:
MB6: Illegals: Those who illegal launch wepons on other susspected illegals!! (No CaP injuries paid by the legal tax payers)
|
Ubi bene ibi patria - where one is well off there is his country. !!!!

I suggest you read American history and what the great founders had to say first.....

AS far as military duty goes , I or anybody cannot be forced into doing any military duty.
Yes, you can be forced to serve in military. Americans were forced to serve in Vietnam or during WWII. If United States is in official state of war, then everybody goes and fights. Now... in this case if you bring your culture and religion and claim "I don't do it". Americans can easily claim that being un-American - and yes, it's a jail time.
Also, don't forget that America was built on European model. America implements English Law. Senate, president, Congress are models implemented looking at Romans and Greeks. Even legal terms are full of Latin. Americans celebrate European holidays, because it happened historically. Because Irish, British, Germans were coming here and building cities, businesses and universities and eventually built this country. So America, how it is today, owes its existence to European culture.
Of course that doesn't mean that we can't come here and bring our own and try to change things how we think is better. :)
|
Well.. Waiting4everAl, since this is not I-485 forum :) I assume that we are citizens :) and I hope you and I will get GC somewhere in November. BTW GC holders might be called for service, they register.
I was talking about hypothetical situation when we are all citizens, how much should we embrace European (especially British) culture and how much should we "implement" our own culture. Overall we would be citizens now if the immigration system wouldn't be broken so much.
And of course, I don't mean you personally. I won't serve either. I meant average young immigrant.
|
Does the NOvember date have something to with GC . You got me interested. I thought qouta now opens in OCT.
Well... I assumed the following scenario: October comes, we file WOM (it will take a week or two). USCIS has 60 days to respond. They respond after about 40 days with approval - which is November :)
|
Waiting4everAl .......... I ure owe you a sincere apology :O)
cheers !!!!

What's so great about America?
1) FREEDOM: You should be from middle east in order to understand the meaning and freedom in this country
2) Capitalism economy (the best and the only system in the world that actually works)
3) Natural beauty of this country....
Thanx for Sinatra .... BTW, the same all 3) you can say about Antarctica, and even more!
1) Freedom - even more then in US (no states, no local laws, ...)
2) Build your own economy!
3) Beauty is ... take a look on pictures! Isn't it beautiful?

|
The problems with Antarctica:
1) It is damn cold.... No livable
2) There are not many human beings around..... :((((
Both 1. and 2. - your personal :))))))))) I know thousands ppl in Siberia and Canada - they like it (I doubt tho)

Everything is great in America!!!!!
God Bless the USA
If tomorrow all the things were gone
I'd worked for all my life,
And I had to start again
with just my children and my wife,
I'd thank my lucky stars
to be living here today,
'Cause the flag still stands for freedom
and they can't take that away.
I'm proud to be an American
where at least I know I'm free,
And I won't forget the men who died
who gave that right to me,
And I gladly stand up next to you
and defend her still today,
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.
From the lakes of Minnesota
to the hills of Tennessee,
Across the plains of Texas
from sea to shining sea.
From Detroit down to Houston
and New York to L.A.,
There's pride in every American heart
and it's time we stand and say:
I'm proud to be an American
where at least I know I'm free,
And I won't forget the men who died
who gave that right to me,
And I gladly stand up next to you
and defend her still today,
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.
PS: I’m not a US citizen yet but this will be a reality soon.
|
