A few words about me
Due to loss of documents sent, I'm assuming this will add weeks onto our timeline. Perhaps starting school in Sept ('08) was a bit ambitious after all ... boo hoo.:-(

forms
I don't know whether you've found the info on this question you posted, but in case you haven't: We are representing ourselves as we sacked our lawyer. At that time, we had to complete the 'Use of a Representative' form (IMM5476) and sent it to the Embassy.
Hope that helps.

HOW LONG AFTER MEDICALS DONE?
Passport Request
Does anyone know how long the CIC hold onto your passports for once you get to the PPR stage? Would it be likely they'd accept them delivered in in person, ie to take away the same once they're done, or do they require them for some time (what do they do with them??). It's occurred to us that, of course, once they've requested your passports, this prevents all travel to Canada in the meantime.
Any feedback would be gratefully received.

Schooling
Does anyone know whether it's possible to register children in school in Canada, prior to residency being granted, on the assumption that it will be granted?
We have informed the school that we intend to enrol the kids. We own a house (so are tax payers) in the right district for the school (that big yellow bus stops right outisde our door!!), it couldn't be more ideal ...
We're intend to go over this summer and stay there, awaiting the residency confirmation. Are we being naive? We've had our 90 day letter and will soon be sending off our updated docs in response.
Any ideas how long the system is currently taking (medicals, interview etc) up to visa being granted?
Is anyone else in the same boat, or perhaps have already done this? I'd love to hear from you asap.
Cheers!

is it useful to get a lawyer?
In our experience, having a lawyer was of no advantage whatsoever, in fact it delayed the process. They took a year to submit the documents which we completed and had notarised (they had our photos for six months in their file, before advising us they weren't quite to the specifications required, for example)
You have to complete the forms yourself so, really, all they do is send it all off. It doesn't get you into the system any quicker. Once in the system, you can check your status online yourself anyway.
I don't see any advantage in hiring a lawyer at all (and it isn't cheap), but that's just my opinion, perhaps others have had positive experiences?

DECISION MADE
You seem to be pretty knowledgeable - I wondered if you (or anyone) could please advise me what are the specific documents required ie, 'updated docs'? I believe that is likely to be our next step, although probably next year now. I'm not entirely sure what the process is.
Any info would be gratefully received!

Chronology of the immigration process from UK ... ?
At the risk of sounding ignorant (but then, I guess I am, when it comes to the emigration process!), can anyone give me an idea of the actual process, ie what happens and in order?
In case that isn't clear, it would be useful to know the specific process, for example is it (1) Initial assessment; (2) Medical; (3 + 4) Docs requested and sent; (5) Interview; (6) Passport requested; (7) Visa received?
Maybe it's obvious to everyone except me!
But where does the '120 day letter' fit in with this?
Is there a 90 day letter (or have I imagined that!), if so, what is it and when in the process should that be anticipated?
E-mail me direct if more preferable.
Thanks!

Speeding up the process - is it possible!?
Thanks for your post. Yes, I heard of the PNP option but as luck would have it, we're headed for Ontario which hasn't yet got their PNP up and running, I hear it's in the pipeline but have no idea when that could be effective as far as we are concerned! Bummer, eh!
I've looked at the secretarial - and legal secretarial - jobs sites in the area but there's nothing.
Are you out there from the UK?

should i get my medical while i wait?
I wouldn't be too hopeful for hearing something by this July. We applied in November 2005 and nothing further has happened apart from AOR. Looking just at others on this website, it seems to be 2 or 3 years before the medical is required/obtained, so might not be a good thing to do one too long in advance. That's just my opinion though, for what it's worth!

No, he's only now getting his resume etc together to apply to the Ontario Bar Association (? re: NCA). You will no doubt know, then, that once re-qualified under Canadian law, you then have to work for another practice for three years before setting up your own business (if that's your intention).
Interesting to hear that it may be quicker to look elsewhere other than Ontario. I'd be very interested to hear of your progress (as it happens)!
Good luck.

Speeding up the process - is it possible!?
Thanks for that, I do check out the cic.gc site for the timescale periodically but it's too depressing!
One question there, you know how you can log in your file number to see how it's going? When I do this, I get a message that basically tells me that they were 'unable to identify' me from the information, it says that that service is only available to clients with applications in process. If we are only at the AOR stage, then I guess we aren't yet in the process, would you think?
However, even just from the trackitt site here, it seems that most folk are entering the process sooner than the 37 months (we were told we'd have to wait for 37 months before the process even began). So it seems the 37 months is in fact from the date of application, not from the intial assessment?
I think the student visa thing may be our best option. I'm a Legal Secretary but would happily consider other secretarial/admin roles, sadly though there is nothing in the area we'll be in (we already have a house, waiting for us, which is all the more frustrating!).
Thanks again for your input, much appreciated.
