"Canada Pros: Free health benefits, people are friendly....no one treats you like alien, "

your point is spot on. i went to canada recently, people are so friendly and smiling faces everyone. as soon as we reach US border, arrogant people started. they look at you as if you are way lesser than them... no respect...

this is the big difference i noticed.

If you have a plan for worst case scenario then you are good.

I would suggest to take an appointment on Monday. i noticed that middle of the week appointments takes longer. just my observation, i could be wrong.

:-) i did see it, but had no words to explain him why i am making it a big deal!

anyways, as you had mentioned before, people will say that you got it and you do not want anyone to get it.... this is exactly that situation.

I know how much stressful those days were for me. i cannot explain that in words.

Yes, i completely agree with you. i had my friends who got the stamp and visa in 3 days, mine took longer compared to them. and you have no idea how stressful it was. i was even looking for apartment to stay there since it was in admin process. it was a nightmare which started on day 3. and lasted till i crossed the US border. i had my kids with me, so it was very difficult, and was thinking that i wont be able to see them if i had to stay there in canada.

I know you had suggested to not to go to canada, and i am sugeesting the same to other, unless you have plan B or you have some family there, i case you had to stay longer. for me no one was there. and with kids it is very difficult, i was seeing stars in the day light.

I feel very lucky to be back. and hope everyone who is waiting for longer time gets the visa stamp as well.

Topic: H1B stamping in Toronto

I wanted to share my experience in Canada for h1b Stamping:

i reached out to all, for help when i was deciding to go there. but was very confused. but took a decision and went there.

During the appointment scheduling process: i learned that we do not need to submit the DS 160, only reference number is required to book an appointment. and also you can change the location on the ds 160 later before submitting. i was looking for appointments in Toronto, montreal or quebec.

All appointments were booked till september. but you must keep checking since due to cancellation, i got the appointment in montreal in march.

Canada border crossing: i was a smooth process, we didnt have to come out of the car, they just took the passports and checking us all with names, kids were waving hands, and they let us go with out checking anything: (i had different people say different things, no food is allowed this and that, but there was no checking)

previous day: reached montreal, our hotel was in downtown, walked to consulate, to check the address

Day 1: my appointment was at 12.30, which was first appointment, reached consulate at 12 and no one was there. went inside, and security told me to wait outside. at 12.15 people started coming and we formed a line outside. at 12.55 they let us go in. i was first, they checked DS 160 and security check, no backpacks are allowed, no cell phone.

after security check, they asked us to go to 19th floor, a lady was standing on 19th floor, and she checked the DS 160 and asked us to stand in the line next to the window. two officers came after 10min, and asked us to come to window one by one.

Lady at the window asked me about DS 160, passport, I-797, she entered i-797 number in the system, and said you work for , i said yes, and this is your 3rd stamping, i said yes.

they she asked me to give the picture. i gave her, but she said is this recent? since i renewed the passport 3months ago, i was using same picture as passport for this appointment, but she didnt accept it, she asked if i have 10$, i said yes, i gave her USD, but she said i need CAD, but i didnt have it, so she gave me white slip and asked me to go outside and take the picture and come back on or before 1.30. she gave me directions to pharmacy. but i took the wrong turn, and walked 1mile to the picture and rushed back to consulate at 1.40, with same security checking process, they let me in again, and lady had asked me to come back directly to her window, not to stand in the line, i did the same and went. she had all my documents, she took picture scanned it and gave me back and asked me to go to next window for finger prints. after finger prints were done, there was no one to tell me what to do next. but i saw people sitting on the chairs in rows, i sat next to them and lady was coming outside and taking one row at a time inside for real interview. this whole process till now was just reviewing your documents.

Inside was small room, they asked us to sit again, and we could hear everything what they were asking to other candidates.

my turn, lady in the first window, had given me all my documents in one folder, and asked me to give it to VO, so i did the same, it had I-797, passport. she took the I-797, asked me below questions:

Why are you going to US?
which company do you work for?
how many employees in this company?
all in one location?
how long have you been working?
with the same employer?
what is your job title?
do you have your resume? can you give me that?
she checked my whole resume, or atleast she was pretending.
what are your job responsiblities?
last time when you travelled to other countries?
you didnt go to your home country for so long? she was surprised with my ans.

then she said your visa is approved, you will get an email with 3 to 5 business days. i had my old passports, so she took out recent passport and gave me old passports back.

Day 2: checked the email, no update, DS 160 status says admin processing.
Day 3: checked the email, no update, DS 160 status says admin processing.
Day 4: checked the email, no update, DS 160 status says admin processing.

i was freaking out, called my HR, my attorney. but they were stressed out as well. i was texting my manager as well, giving him all the updates. and i think he was following up with HR as well.

Day 5: got the email that documents are being released. i was so happy to see the email. but when i checked the DS 160 status, it was still saying admin processing.

Called HR and attorney, and they said that, i will get 221g and i may have to submit some documents. i was stressing out so much. i was looking for apartments and was thinkign of working from there.

Day 6: still DS 160 status admin processing. went to post office, picked up the package, by showing US driver's license. and opened it right there. and was so relieved to see visa stamp on it.

called my manager, my HR and attorney, attorney suggested to come back as soon as possible, because DS 160 status was admin processing, to avoid any issues at the broder. started within an hour. and at the border, they again checked our passports, and asked us to go to secondary inspection. i was again tensed, but they just asked basic questions, and asked us to pay 6$ for I94. i did that, took the passport and drove back to US.

I wanted to share this experience, because i know how stressful it is for us all to go through this process. every day every second counts. and i was having every possible difficulty in the process. DS 160 status updated after a day i came back to US. not sure what was wrong with that, but our attorney said, it was the weiredest thing ever, and they never heard this issue before.

guys, my advise: do not take chances, unless it is very necessary.

EB3 I-140 has to be valid, for EB2 porters to utilize EB3 I-140. some employers withdrew the applications it seems. we have to check with the EB3 employer to make sure it is still active. which i doubt it will be for those consultants employers.

and yes, if both are with same company, it will be easier. which in my case is the case. i just hope this moment continues. Dec 2009 is still too far in both cases.

can i change the appointment later or change the location for the appointment in canada, if i do so, do i need to fill another DS160 and enter that confirmation number while taking the appointment, or the old one would work.

example, i filled the DS 160 with Toronto location, while taking the appointment, i entered this DS 160 number there. but now i want to change it to Montreal, do i need to fill another DS 160 and then enter that number before making a change to the appointment.

Please advise.

i am going for visa stamping only.

but now looking at the comments from sam and usics, i am rethinking now. i want to avoid losing my days in india for visa stamping because i will be going for 2 weeks only. so wanted to get visa stamp from canada so that i can spend my whole 2 weeks with family, instead of running around for visa in india.

i am FTE, in american company. so hoping i would not have any issues. fingers crossed!

Toronto is 5 hours drive for me, so it is easier to go there. and I am planning to go with my family.

do you need to pay the fee before checking for appointments for Canada, similar to what we have in india?

I haven't submitted the DS160 form yet. I want to check the date availability first. can you please point me to the direction where I can check that.

I think it is very early for jan 2011 to get GC as per your calculations. mine is dec 2009 PD, and am not positive that I will get even EAD by next year. depending upon the inventory and the way dates are moving.

so to say for jan 2011 it will be 2020 or even 2023 will be very wrong.
