Topic: status change to CPO while in Canada - re-entered US on AP
An update ...
I received my actual plastic GC about Oct 11th. A few days ago I went to Canada by car and re-entered US by the Peace bridge in Buffalo. At the border booth showed my GC and the officer let me in within a minute or two (didnt ask for passport). I told him this is the first time I am entering US as a permanent resident and asked him whether I should submit my old I-94 to him or at the office. He said that is not the way it works, and to submit the I-94 to a Canadian border officer next time I go to Canada. |

Thanks. A quick visit to Canada is exactly what I had in mind, right after getting the card. |
Topic: status change to CPO while in Canada - re-entered US on AP
FYI ..
While on a 1 week visit to Canada I noticed my status changed to CPO. No emails. Talked to my attorney who told me not to use the H1B or AP to re-enter but show the printout of online status and then IO would let me in either on permanent resident status or "deferred for inspection" to INS local office (not quite sure what that means). At the border (1000 islands crossing by car) the IO wasnt too interested in my printout. He initially wanted to let me in on H1B status but I talked him out of it (attorney told me H1B may not be valid after I485 approval) and after talking to some other officers he let me in using AP. Seems he was a new guy who was processing an AP for the first time. He gave me an I-94 (strangely it says I-94A instead of just I-94, I dont know what the difference is) with stamp showing my parolee status. |
Topic: disadvantage of extension of B2 visa for parents
If your application for extension is approved, no disadvantages. (except maybe next time they enter the US the IO may question it).
If the application is denied, then the B2 visa becomes invalid and they may become out of status if the decision is after the date of stay authorized on the I-94 they received on initial entry. |

Yes, I mentioned explicitly that I wanted to use AVR. I have AP as well, didnt show it. |

Well there is nothing much to it. The only wrinkle is that most likely the person at the booth will not know what AVR is. If you are lucky, he will call his supervisor right away and ask about it and let you in right away. If the person at the booth is in a testy mood he will immediately ask you to go to another room to meet another officer (the secondary area?), instead of trying to understand the situation. Once there you will probably have to wait about an hour for your turn. This person should know AVR and let you in right away if you have all your documents. Just to be safe keep with you a printout of the AVR rule page (http://travel.state.gov/visa/laws/telegrams/telegrams_1441.html) though I didnt have to show it. I have used AVR once and my wife has used it 3 times in the last 2 months and it is quite safe in my opinion. |

Yes, used AVR at Toronto Pearson International Airport in July. Went fine. No issues. |
Topic: Importing a car
You have to pay about $200 for inspection fee (www.riv.ca). Does not depend on value of car. |
