I don't think you were out of status. I am almost sure that I20 was issued only when you were to leave USA (especially in pre-Sevus time). If you were not leaving, the school did not bother with new I20. I have some years when I was not travelling back and had no I20 to submit. Also, there was something about that illegal stay is counted from the time of your last legal admission. Did you go home after you started grad school?

that is not true. I once had an i20 expire and went through the reinstatement process. you need to have a valid I20 to substantiate the validity of your F1, no I20 = no status if you came in on F1 Visa and your I94 says D/S

Topic: EMERGENT HELP!!! 485 RFE

yes, you were out of status for the 2 years while your i20 was not valid

you should have filed for re-instatement when you entered graduate school with their new I20, it is odd that the international student advisors at your grad school issued you a new i20 provided that you have an expired current i20.

if you are on a different status now i don't think you can correct your past history during F1
