Hi all, I hope this isn't out of line:
My fiancee and I are planning to get married in the next 12-18 Months and emigrate to the US. She's a US Citizen, I'm from the UK and my family has lived here for centuries.
Anyway I have a few questions I hope someone helpful wouldn't mind answering for me:
1) I've read the USCIS requirements on their website, and I'm a little unclear on their policy for dealing with people who have been involved with the police force in the past. I was once arrested at the age of 20 for a public order offence (Breach of the peace, specifically). I was never formally charged, and the police told me that the only reason they did it was to give me a chance to calm down (I had been in an argument that night... A rather loud one). They even gave me a ride home the following morning. That was 12 years ago. So, (a) will this affect my immigration chances, and (b) do I need to declare this on the relevant section of the DS-230 form when I come to fill it out?
2) Again, with DS-230 Part 1, They are asking me about my address history. The 1st part of the form asks me where I've been since I was 16 and is for the purposes of police reports as far as I'm aware, and I have no problem with this as it's limited to town/city and province. The 2nd area where address details are requested is where it asks me for address history going back 5 years, and this is where it might be a little difficult (and could harm my case if the USCIS doesn't like my responses). What I would like to know is:
- a) What length of time do I need to have been at an address for it to be required on the form? There were times where I only stayed with friends for a few days or weeks at a time before staying with other friends.
- b) What UK departments and agencies does the USCIS communicate with when carrying out checks on the information given on the DS-230? I know they check with the Police forces in my county, which I have no problem with whatsoever as I've stayed out of trouble with the law since the above.
- b) What importance is my address history with the USCIS? And would they mind if I provided an address where all of my post and correspondence was sent? The reason I ask this is because while I was spending a lot of time hopping addresses between 2005 and 2008, all of my mail, including anything from the government, was sent to one address only.
3) If the points and questions raised in 2 above are likely to cause me problems, how would I go about solving them? What advice would you give to me? I am a little concerned since I've had a period of some years where I did not have a stable address history despite working full time and despite not having any considerable trouble with the law. In all other respects I'm clean of anything that I'd think the USCIS might have a problem with.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks all.
