i know a green card holder can only be away for up to a year. any time after that will require the use of a reentry permit. if i do not have a reentry permit and return to u.s. after over 1 year... how do they know how long i've been away in the first place?
i mean when i returned to my home country i obviously didn't need a stamp b/c i'm a citizen. so when i return how do they know i've been away from over 1 year...as opposed to being away for 1 month?

Why does it matter how they know? It only matters whether you in fact have been a way or not.
But of course they know, every airline turns in not just the dates or arrival/departure, but your credit card info, even the IP address of the computer you used to make the reservation. I know someone who got an FOIA on his own CBP records and obtained all this info about himself, which is pretty surprising.

thank you for your reply diavatirio.
so are you saying that cbp officers do all this research on EACH PERSON that arrives in the country? hard to belive. or does all of this data pop up on their computer screen when they just type in the immigrant's last name?
p.s. with regards to your question of "why does it matter?"... i want to know so i can be educated.

It doesn't matter whether they know, cause POE can just ask you how long you have been away, and you can't lie. So whether they know or not is immaterial.
They don't do this research on each person that arrives in the country, and to my knowledge this data does not pop up on their computer screen as it is stored on a different system. But they can do further research when you apply for more immigration benefits, and the computers do routinely perform further checks as soon as more systems are interlinked together, which will happen soon.
