Traveling with AP close to the expiration date

Hi All,

My combo card is going to expire on June 5th. We are planning to travel outside of the US from May 6th to May30th. Three questions:

1. Is it dangerous to travel close to the expiration date of the combo card? Someone told me that I might want to double check that, as he has seen people claiming it might pose a problem for re-entry.

2. Most likely, my interview for GC would be scheduled when I am outside of the US. I assume we can re-schedule that. Right?

3. It seems that if I apply for AP renewal, it would be rejected. Someone was suggesting that this is only true for the Texas center and Nebraska is not denying AP renewals because of travel. Any thoughts for that? Should I just apply for renewal after getting back into the US?

Thanks.

1. No - you should be good as long as you come back the day before the expiration date
2. Yes - but I think you'd better have your friend check your mailbox for you in case you miss any important communication
3. Your renewal application will be rejected if the application for renewal is pending when you are traveling even with your available valid AP regardless of which service center you filed with. That being said, you should file your renewal after you come back right away.

Awesome! Thanks very much!

So, then should I apply for EAD renewal now and then send the application for AP renewal after I get back?

Yours is not combo card? i am more concerned about travel doc rather than EAD as for EAD, if you are in certain categories, once you file the renewal, you have 180 days grace period after the expiration date.

Thanks again. Yes it is combo card. But, as you mentioned, if I renew the AP right now it would be rejected. At the same time I need to renew my EAD before my travel, because I will get back in US a few days prior to the expiration of current EAD. What do you think?
