Friends,

Last year my wife received SSN due to H4 EAD authorization, I duly notified the IRS and merged the ITN with the SSN. This year efiled taxes, the federal tax got accepted but IL state tax is getting rejected multiple times. Tried entering the right information multiple times but still no go. Has anyone run into this situation? Any help is appreciated.

It happened to me first year as well... Sometimes it takes time to complete the process so if there is an error, file manually and from next year it should work just fine. I did the same

what is the process to notify IRS? Is there a form that has to be filled and mailed?

to iam2:

No action required. You just file with SSN next time. If you really want to do it, you can go to local IRS and ask them to update it. But it doesn't mean anything or make any difference.

The right process is to to visit IRS local office and fill a small form to merge both ITIN and SSN. This is a required step once a person receive SSN, it is even mentioned in ITIN document. To avoid any future issues, everyone must inform IRS about this change.

First time state filers might need to send in paper form.
