Hi,
I am planning to file for EAD extension and unable to decide whether to go for eFile or Paper filing. Could you please share your thoughts on which option is better and easy. Also please share if its good idea to go through attorney or its easy enough to file on our own.
Also please let me know the link to EAD eFile.
Appreciate your response.

to goodguy:
I eFiled my EAD "renewal" and its easy and straight forward. I feel first time filing is also not that tricky. You dont need an attorney to do this simple task. Its easier than filing 1040 with IRS. The eFiling link is below.

Good Luck!!

to goodguy:
Goodguy: I did paper based for extension. I tried the e-file feature but I decided to do by paper as it is less work and easier to understand. Also, I heard if you do it by paper you do not have to go for finger prints again. Good luck.

to jetta2002:
jetta: Did you file extension for I 131 AP? What do you have to fill out for class of admission? Also, did you also have to submit a separate piece of paper explaining why you would need to apply for AP? Thanks.
|
to jetta2002:
I concur - my efile was straight forward.
Please make sure you mail hard copies of
- last EAD card
- copy of the last EAD approval
- copy of pending I-485
- copy of approved I-140 wont hurt
Best of luck

to gcardrabbit:
I haven't filed I-131 AP, I did submit I-765 only. I guess you should put H1B1 in class of admission. I just saw my wife's AP renewal application (done by reputed attorney) and it shows H4 as she is dependant. May it helps!
|
I renewed my EAD through EFlile. Less than a month, I got Finger Print Appointment, and after another month I got Card Production Order. very simple and smooth. I just submitted a copy of my I-485 and Front/back copy of my old EAD along with the online receipt notice. I recommend you to file online. You can check my profile for exact dates.
About AP, I just filed online as well and I believe it should be straight forward like EAD.
|
to gcardrabbit:
hey are you sure if we do paper file then we dont have to go finger prints and did you got EAD with out finger prints ??????
|
to mvp2009:
Efiling avoids unnecessary typos and you have your receipt number in a minute!
If you are renewing EAD (and expecting a fee waiver) you have to file paper-based.
Additionally, if your ASC office far away from you leave (15-20 plus miles), it is better to
file paper based as you can avoid biometrics. Either case, you have to include your supporting
documents, and can include the EAD mailer (if you are renewing).

to mvp2009:
That is what I heard from this Forum, no FP for Paper based. Also, I started E-file first, but they did not have my Airport listed so I did not know what to write, so with paper you can just write your arrival airport. At the same time there was a country issue as well they had 5 different options to pick for Germany. E-file has lots of unnecessary information to confuse one. Paper was only 1 page and much more straight forward.

to deepss:
Hi,
My company lawyer applied EAD & AP online. And I asked them about EAD & AP receipt numbers but they said I will get it by mail.
Could you please confirm
- Thanks
|
to parthi:
They meaning CRIS will mail you receipt(s). Should show up no later than a week.
|
to parthi:
Parthi,
You get the receipt numbers as soon as you click the submit button.
Additionally, you get the notice by mail after 3-4 days.

to deepss:
I did e-file for my wife both I131 and I765, recieved reciept notices as soon as I submitted them. And reieved both reciept notices in the mail after 3 days. Also got FP notice within a week.
deepss, I'm curious about fee waiver if you're renewing EAD by paper based, is that true that you don't need to pay for it?
Also anyone can confirm that no FP notice if you do by paper so that I can avoid travelling to INS office for myself.
Thanks all,
|
to deepss:
deepss,
can you reply back with fee waiver question.
Is anyone agrees/confirm what deepss said about paper based EAD fee waiver.
Thanks
|
hello i file befor my EAD in Nebraska Service Center so this time i have to do in NSC and can you give me address i have send from thanks
|
to goodguy:
I did efiling for 765 and I131.
Everything went good till fingerprinting. I even got my I131 approved (me and my wife)
But EAD is not approved yet.
The trend I see is they approve paper based faster than the efilied ones I don't know why.
To add to the complexity from this month I am current.
|
to gcneeded:
Hi,
If you have filed with the new fee structure (for I-485) or a
filed I-765 with the new fee (340) after Aug 17th, you may
be eligible for fee waiver. In such a case, you can include
a cover letter requesting the fee waiver and file a paper-
based application for I-765.
Also go through the inst-pdf file for I-765.
I am subscribing to this discussion, just in case you have
more questions.

hey kmapte did you file in NSC and what address did you send all paper work ?
to mvp2009:
I send it to TSC and this was the address on the recipt.
Also in the instructins they had mentioned where to send depending on location. I am in PA so send it to TSC.
I even verified that they recived my supporting docs.
|
to kmapte:
This thread is going to be helpful as it looks like I will have to file for EAD/AP extension. I just wanted to avoid the Fingerprinting but I think I will go for it anyway now.
|
to goodguy:
Plan to file paper application instead of e-filing. There are 2 headaches with e-filing
1. You need to go for finger printing if you e-file
2. E-filing approvals take longer than the paper filing maybe because of finger printing at local office and that needs to reach the INS Center and then you will never know when they pickup the case again.
I did paper filing and my EAD got approved less than a month where my friend filed e-filing and he is not approved yet its been over 4 months.
I hope this helps.

jetta2002: Doesn't class of admission has to be F1? Since I applied from OPT to H1B? I never traveled with H1B.
Also, did you guys write a letter stating why you would need I 131 application? Do you remember it asks why one needs to apply for I 131? Thanks.

to gcardrabbit:
Hi -
I will filing for EAD renewal for me and my wife.
When I send the applications for both, can I send it one FEDEX package? OR both needs to be sent separately?
Also what is the procedute to paper file?
Can someone please give me the link for latest forms/fees?
Thanks Much.
|
to Josh:
I had called up USCIS today to get clarification on this. In my case I have already Efiled and I just wanted to check on the supporting documentation that has to be mailed to them. I was told that i can put everything as a part of one packet for my wife and myself together.
|
to harshdeepw:
harshdeepw, you better separate both your papers with separate paper clips and put it in same envelop will work. Don't forget to put the confirmation receipt (each) at the top of (each) your paper sets.
|
to jetta2002:
Thank you guys for your response.
|
to Josh:
Where can I find the latest process for paper filing the EAD?
Please let me know.
Thanks again.
|
EAD Renewal applied through efile, approved in less than 5 weeks. I have not sent any supporting documents. But I had to go for Fingerprinting and Photo (Code 2). One should make sure in efile process, not to check the check box where it says, are you planning to send supporting documents.
|
to krikohio:
E-filed bothe i140 and i485. it seems to get receipt notice faster.
|
to goodguy:
I have my attorney office did the renewal (I believe it's traditional paper filing since i didn't need fingerprint), sent package with fedex on 7/24; got the card on 8/16; card shows start from 8/10/08, and i got 2 yrs card. TSC Office
|
to lmaps123:
My 485 was filed during July 2007 fiasco and I had fee base on old fee structure (before July 30, 07).
I have some questions for folks who have successfully eFiled your EAD and AP:
1. Does eFiling EAD trigger fresh Finger printing?
2. Does that require you to pay extra $80 fro FP on top of $340 EAD fee?
3. Does AP trigger FP also?
4. Is eFiling of AP or EAD processing slower than paper filing?
Thanks
|
to Wtng4Ever:
My suggestions:
1. Does eFiling EAD trigger fresh Finger printing?
Yes, EAD efiling will generate the finger printing.
2. Does that require you to pay extra $80 fro FP on top of $340 EAD fee?
No extra fee, included in $340
3. Does AP trigger FP also?
I do not know, please check the I-131 forums
4. Is eFiling of AP or EAD processing slower than paper filing?
Some people prefer paper filing for EAD to be faster as there
is no FP. If you are applying 70-90 days in advance, efiling is
an option.
|
to deepss:
Thanks Deepss. I am thinking of paper filing as FP location is 50-60 miles away from where I live.
|
to Wtng4Ever:
What if we do efile and the EAD is going to expire in 30 days, I hope the efiling is still an option, only thing is it'll not be approved within 30 days.
I am still on H1B status and not in hurry to get the EAD within 30 days?
I efiled the application 15 mins back and then came across this thread where people say that efile means "go for FP" again. If I had read all of this before, I would've gone for paper filing...
I did NOT check the box where it says "I intend to send the paper documents". So I assume that I do not have to send any documents to USCIS now. Just wait for FP notice, get FP done and then wait for 90 days. Pls correct me if I am wrong.
|
to ekindian:
I did the mistake of efile and waiting for 3 months, still no clue -
I sent the papers after efile as well.
my friend paper filed EAD and he got in 15 days.
|
to EB1CDude:
do we have the sign the photographs we send with the renewals..my lawyer is telling me no...thoughts?
|
to pattadeyyaar:
Mine is paper filed with RD of june 24th and still waiting. There may be different factors that we may have to consider..... either it;s paper or efile.
|
to GCardFever:
My lawyer charged me $150 on top of the fees for paper filling-and since you still have to send paper supporting documents-why not sending a paper form as well. One upside is that you don't have to take a day off for fingerprints-so in my case I saved more spending on lawyer than doing it myself online and going for biometrics. It's your call-whatever is more convenient.
Plus from what I see paper fillings are being processed faster.
|
to wojciechk:
seems like every1 is having different experiences with efiling .. i did mine in aug..n it was a breeze! got approved with in a month... AP+EAD renewal ...
|
to PD4May2006:
quick queston when you said "last EAD approval" you mean form I797 indicating EAD is approved or the letter that comes with the EAD card.

to parthi:
Hi Parthi!
If your EAD expires you can work without authorization for 180 days since your last entry to the US under INS 245 (k) law. Your employer will be penalized though If caught employing somebody without authorization. It is basically up to your employer if they will allow you to work. If they are strict about the law, then they wont allow you to work.

to Bobmarley:
Yes do not efile since it takes way more time than regular paper filing ....
By now you should know ppl in USCIS are not computer literate :-) after so many goof ups of theres ..........
|
to xchap:
From my personal experience, I would recommend paper filing over e-filing. My case took 120 days and I ended up not working for a few days, while paper filers at that time got it in under 90 days. I don't know about the paper filing form on the USCIS website though, it has an expiry date of 8/31/08.
|
to knacath:
I did paper filing, and it got approved in a month. I would suggest you to do the same
|
to shynee:
Absolutely concur with shynee, my experience was very very scary with e-filing. Had many many sleepless night because I was very very close to expiry. Finally, I did get a 2 year EAD.
