What is a LUD???
Since I see some people wondering or being confuses about this, and I was somewhat confused myself, I thought I should try to clarify it.

Let's start from the beginning. When you file a case with USCIS you get a receipt notice that has your case number. It starts with LIN if your case is in Nebraska, SRC if it is in Texas and another three letter code if it is at another service center. Using this case number you can check the status of your case at the http://www.uscis.gov web site. You can do this in two ways:

1. By entering the case number on the web site.
2. By setting up a Customer portfolio that can monitor one or more cases.

Both methods will show you the status of your case, and if you set up a portfolio an email will (usually) be sent to you when your case status changes. This will be a "hard" LUD (Last Up Dated) since you know why the case was updated since you will see the change in status.

However, the status will only change if the USCIS sends you something (receipt notice,RFE, approval notice, notice of intent to deny, card, or other documents), and when they receive something you sent to them (application, request for premium processing, answer to RFE, or other documents). Technically I think the status changes if they make a decision without sending something too, but I don't think they ever do that.

From the time the USCIS gets your application to the time it gets approved, a lot of things happens to it: your fingerprints get added, your name check results come back, it gets prepared for approval, and other things that only USCIS knows about .... This does not change the status and you will not get an email about it either. I'll call this a "soft" LUD. The only way you can see this is if you have a portfolio and you log in to your account. You will see that the Last Updated date for one or more of your cases has changed without the status being changed. To be able to catch every time you get a "soft" LUD you have to log in to your portfolio at least once every business day. Even though many, including myself tries to figure out what these "soft" LUDs mean, there is really no one outside the USCIS that will know why the case was touched, but there are many guesses.

Hope this clears up some of the mystery for someone.
