I am also in same boat, mine H1 extension was filed in FEB 2017 but still no update on case. Is this possible to track back the application? After 240 aus of filing I think you can raise a service request to ask the status, did you checked?

I got RFE and responded in June 21, still waiting for a response from USCIS. Yeah I also read as one can't work after 240 days from I-90 expiry

What was the RFE about ? was it Employee employer relationship ?
when is your 240 days (since visa expiry) due on ?
