Checking the April visa bulletin, it's taken USCIS from Dec 2008 to Mar 2009, to move from priority date of 15Oct2001 till 1Nov2001. That's 3 months to move forward 15 days. By that rate, to get to 2002 will take still longer (even if paperwork is approved by a processing center). And to go from 2002 to 2003, and then from 2003 to 2004 will take several years, not just 1 or 2 or 3 years. Is this to be expected or does anyone have any other information about proposed approval dates?

I finally recd my Green Card today 11 years after the priority date.
Enormous relief, didn't think this day would ever come, right upto this morning.
Thanks to Trackitt users for advice, experience info and simply for the support.
